paddy, if your host cant ping then you DO have a prb

In your post..."OK, Thanks to Steve I am kind of getting there...."
you should have more external info, there.
It looks like you might be directly accesssing the 'net on the host pc instead of going through ICS

        yup, cards are ok.
The installation is pretty fresh (1mth)
I am thinking of making the client run win98 as that would be better for network games.

I take it that ICS should work the same for 98 (As it is enabled on the host machine - 2K). Would i have to set the client up any differently?

Yes, you go through the same setup steps as in Win98SE (sans the icslset.exe program, which is totally unneccesary for 99% of the machines out there.)

Use the internet connections wizard, and check the "I want to set up my internet connection manually..." box, and make sure the "Automatically detect proxy server settings" box is checked on the next step.

It's not hard to bollix ICS under Win2K.

Just for grins, have tried to swap the cables on the NICs (your internet NIC with your LAN NIC) and tried sharing them that way?

I know you are trying hard not to reinstall, but let me reiterate that I believe that your ultimate solution will be to do just that.

Last night, I reinstalled Win2K from the ground up, and got ICS working on the first try.

I don't know why you have any problems - I used win2k's ICS by simply ticking the sharing box when I got my cable modem and it worked first time. Then last night I did a fresh install of win2k pro on my 'server' (net sharing PC) after giving up with nat32 under NT, and ticked the sharing box, and hey presto, it worked first time.

Are you sure your network cards are ok? and are you sure your copy of win2k isn't knackered?

              Cheers.

I am gonna put win98 on the client as that would be more usefull to me at the mo.

I could just do with another 8Gb IDE drive!

                Hey Multimedia man..

Must be some electricity bill every month, does it still fit in your mail box? I have seen businesses with less hardware
