  • Plextor 12/10/32 SCSI CDRW

Anyone know a cheap place in the UK to pick one of these babies up?

    Thanks in advance!

    I have seen a 12x10x32 IDE drive for £200 (inc VAT)and a 12x4x32 SCSI drive for £260.

Given that the RW speed on the IDE is faster and its £60 cheaper (and i have a spare port), which would you go for?

    Cheers

I would still go for the SCSI. SCSI and burners are like a match made in heaven. What's the use of having fast RW speeds, if you have to wait while it's burning to do other things? With SCSI, you can go about your business of using your computer while the burn is going through.

But the Plextor IDE drives do look nice

        Wait until next month!
Take a look at what Yamaha are releasing in SCSI flavour.
Similar specs to the Plextor, but better
Complete audio CD RIP in 5 minutes.
Due for release mid-late November, it's gonna be the CD-RW to own.
It cost one penny to cross, or one hundred gold pieces if you had a billygoat.

I'm already getting 6-7 minutes from my Pioneer.

The IDE Plextor is nice though. With BURN-Proof, you don't have to wait to do other things. It stops burning if the buffer empties, and picks right back up when it can.

            Wombat,

True, but with Burn-Proof, the burn process will be longer if you are using cpu intensive tasks.

Agreed. So if your SETI scores mean that much, go SCSI. Otherwise, even doubling my 5 minute burn time is fine with me.
The SCSI does sport a 4MB buffer over my 2MB, but money's a factor for me.

                Thanks,

money is a factor for me too
If i can get the SCSI for under £230 then i'll go for it. If not I'll get the SCSI. Cheers for the sppedy reply lads!

Just to add some further points on the Yamaha models that are being released in about three weeks time.
                    They are 16x write, 10x re-write & 40x Read.
                    They have an 8MB Buffer.
Full specs can be found here: http://cd-recording.yamaha.de/england/index.html

In the UK Dabs.com have them listed for pre-order.
OEM SCSI version - £209.15inc vat.
Retail SCSI version - £219.73inc vat.

No I don't work for Yamaha
I just have one of their 4x4x16 units and love it.
I'm not sure how this compares to the Plextor for price, but I think it's similar.

Sorry it was early when i posted that!

                      The Yamaha looks cheaper...

btw, does anyone know why the cheaper IDE drive has a faster RW speed than the SCSI? 4x cf 10x!

Because it's a different drive. The 12x10x32 scsi version isn't out yet.

                            Err,

Not to burst your bubble, but Yamaha don't read or write RAW. If you never intend to copy any protected programs, or any CD's intended for other OS's, then fine. But if so, Yamaha just won't cut it.

                              No bubble burst
I have no intention of copying anything that shouldn't be copied or for any other OS.
I just looooove the idea of 16x write, and that 8MB buffer will mean no coasters ever again.
