  • Windows 98 bootup problem???

    Well I've been playing around with my buddies new system that I built for him and I noticed that when windows boots up, the Splash screen comes up then goes away after a couple seconds and then I'm left with a DOS screen which it stays at for I guess 5-15 seconds before it goes into the desktop. I never seen this happen before, but otherwise the system is running fine. The specs of the computer are 1 GHz Althlon, Asus A7V, SB Live, Asus V7700 64MB Geforce2 GTS :P, and a IBM 45GB ATA100 HD on the Promise ATA100 Controler.

    This happens when there is a line in the autoexec.bat file that isn't done with echoing off.

    Thought 1:

    - Edit the autoexec.bat, and add a line at the very beginning that says:

    @echo off

    Thought 2:

    - Delete the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, outright.

    Although, thought 2 involves knowing that there's nothing important left in there. Careful.

          Unless you're going to be using Dos you don't need config.sys or autoexec.bat to be honest.

            Jason: I had that thing happening to me even with an @echo off at the start of my autoexec.bat It could also happen when you load a direct memory driver in config.sys (cdrom driver, screen driver, anything needing drivers in a config.sys )

            GT98, it generally doesn't hurt to delete config.sys and autoexec.bat, unless there's an ISA card in the system that needs generic drivers, or as Jim says, if there's a NIC in the PC (qualifies for a Cable modem as well). It won't hold the loading of Windows, if that's what you're worried about

            If you want to keep the loading of Windows as short as possible, disable all sounds and most of the true-type fonts. Then you won't see that black screen and blnking cursor too long
