I've got a PCG-C1XD which, although it comes with a restore CD, is only supplied with an external floppy. My guess is to use it you need the official Sony external CD-ROM drive. They should have provided you with the floppy disk drive as that comes with the notebook, without one your stuffed Have you got access to a PCMCIA network adaptor as you may be able to transfer files to it that way.

Another idea but this ones a bit drastic! get hold of a 2.5" to 3.5" hard disk convertor, take the hard disk out and connect it, using the adaptor, to a desktop PC.

True, the only way to recover from such a big crash is using the Vaio Recovery CD-ROMs that came with the laptop. This means that you need a PCMCIA CD-ROM drive. Ask your university about it. Also make sure, that if they give you the external CDROM drive and the CDROMs, that the CDs are the right ones.

Your CDs should have PCG-xxxx printed on them, with the xxxx representing a number.

Check on www.sonystyle.com for your Vaio options

All vaios come with a CD-Rom and a floppy drive. If you didn't get one, they are screwing with you. Go back and get it from them.

Thanks for all the suggestions,I bought it at an auction and the drives were not available.I contacted one of the U's network specialists and he was not very helpful.I'm not afraid to take it apart-I may take up Taz's suggestion and take the drive out.I'll first price out the cd drive option.
                Thanks all...

Taking the drive out is what I do on laptops like that - the 2.5" ide converters are only a few quid...
