I use the PhoneLan (3Com) for my GF's PC connection to the net through my cable modem rig.

It's rated @ 10MBit, and does a very nice job.

You may notice some "reduction" in the Volume of the audio when talking on the phone. It may be just my imagination, but I think it's a little quieter with it connected.

Run a bit of CAT5 - it'll be fine! (That's what I'd do anyway, as I'd HAVE to have 100mbps, even if I didn't use it)

CAT 5 is the best way. Keep in mind that 100 meters is the specified maximum length of a 100baseT cable to maintain performance (although you could probably go a little further, but I've never tried).

Pace wants another network solution! Wireless, Phone, Ethernet?

Ok, I've got my PC in a separate building from my actual house (a converted outbuilding) and I want to have a PC in the house as well. Possibly a low-end Pentium for web browsing and email but maybe a P3 for playing shared media (music or video).

The buildings are about 75m apart (~75yds) and I think this puts me outwith the range of 3Com's wireless LAN (though the price was a little prohibitive too).

Next idea is a PhoneLAN. The phoneline does have an extension over there so no extra cabling would be required. However, how good is PhoneLAN products? 1Mbps I think, so would this be good enough for streaming (high quality) music and video? I also presume this would affect ADSL...

Finally, ethernet - let's me use 100mbit so no bandwidth problems but I have to lay maybe upwards 100m of cable!

Some general observations/opinions appreciated!

I punched my own CAT5 cables and wall sockets. Much cheaper way to go than buying ready made cables and I couldn't find one long enough. The wall sockets are a very professional touch. You also can run video through CAT5 for extended distances.
