I'll wait until 3dss has reviewed it. They tend to have more technical knowledge.

HARDWARE: Acoustic Edge 5.1-Channel Surround Sound Card
      11/07/2000
      Retail: $99.00
      Company: Philips
      Reviewed by Marc Rigney
"The card itself uses a slightly different way to attach speakers, using a cable with a mini-DIN attachment on one end, and with three female stereo connectors coming out of the other. The three cables are labeled for Front L/R, Rear L/R, and Center/Sub. This will allow you to hook up almost any set of PC speakers on the market, making this the most flexible sound card we’ve ever seen. Compare this to the Creative SoundBlaster Live! Platinum 5.1 we reviewed a while back. That card had a proprietary out that only allowed you to attach those horrible Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 speakers to get 5.1 sound."

That is a lie, the Live! allows the same Front L/R, rear L/R and C/S connections.

Read other reviews, if they tell a blatant lie like that I can't trust anything else they have to say

Denty...I think he was refering to digital connections to get Dolby Digital. If I read the review correctly, I think he meant that a the S/PDIF output on the Philips AE card would put out a 96kHz/24 Bit stream for ALL sound.

The Digital DIN connection is a great idea, but limited seeing that most of the crowd here that are audiophiles of varying degrees seem to have a bent toward home theatre gear instead of desktop speakers.

There's been an interesting thread going on in the AVS forums about the quality of digital data streams coming out of HTPC rigs. A Dolby Labs employee (handle is thager) just got done conducting some tests and concluded:

... These results provide strong evidence that the ones and zeros representing AC-3 (and probably DTS, to be fair) coming across the S/PDIF port from your HTPC are exactly the same whichever sound card or DVD player you may be using.
Good info in this thread. Go check it out.
