The real goldmine of the p4's is the sse2 instructions. I wanna see how much of a performance boost they give. Games coming out right now already have them! (ie. Sacrifice)

P4@1.5 GHz same speed as a PII@1GHz!!!

If only would AMD come with a better version of Athlon... same power, less noise and less heat... I've read a review of the Athlon 1GHz system and it's fast but terribly made. 6 fans that sound like a vacuum cleaner and the CPU generates immense amounts of heat, plus installing anything is a major pain.
*end rant*Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

GamePC has a review up on the P4.
http://www.gamepc.com/reviews/hardwa...1&mscssid=&tp=
I'm not particularly happy about the "upgrade your case or motherboard tray" business:
"These retention clips also attach to the back of your computer case's motherboard tray, meaning most, if not all, older ATX and AT cases will be incompatible with the Pentium 4."
*If* this is true, then the "heavy-handed-big-fat-jerk-who-needs-to-be-hit-in-the-head-with-a-frying-pan-every-morning-before-breakfast-just-to-reinforce-that-he-is-a-big-fat-jerk" factor comes into play, once again. I could see if this was a change in motherboard form factor, but having to upgrade a nice new full tower for a retention clip?
I suspect the Pentium 4 will be a fine performer. My problem with Intel is that they seem to strive to live up to their old nickname, Satan.

The next AMD cpu will support SSE 2, a full implementation according to an interview at comdex with AMD on one web site, unfortunately, not http://www.intel.com/, so obviously the source can't be trusted.
I just wonder if the P4 should come with PR ratings ala the old cyrix chips.
Cases, well, as luck would have it, my new ATX 2.03 power supply has the extra funky P4 power connector, but a lot of folks would be looking at a new power supply anyway, which is 80% the cost involved in a new case.
From that article:
"First off, all Pentium 4 boards now include a special 4-pin 12V power connector near the CPU. This 4-pin connector supplies extra power to the CPU when it needs it, and will be especially useful when Pentium 4 chips start reaching the 2 GHz mark and beyond, and start using in upwards of 70+W (current Pentium 4 chips use around 55W of power). Unfortunately, this means end-users like yourselves will have to purchase power supplies with these connectors, making your old ATX power supplies useless if you're planning upgrading to a Pentium 4. Power supplies without this plug do not have the ability to deliver high amounts of current on the 12V line as required by the P4 design. "

Major BS ..I'm using just 1 case-fan in my 1.1Ghz and i use occasionally my 2nd fan on the back of the Case when i'm o/c my CPU.I installed my system in less than 1 hour that including applying the Artic Silver in the CPU.

Simply go back and delete them. IE seems to like that double posting BS. NS doesn't have a problem with this tho"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -- Dr. Seuss

I didn't know there were intel fans, or many of them at least. Last time I checked, I didn't see an intelzone, or SSENOW! website...maybe you could point them to me.
What's interesting is that roughly a year ago AMD released a processor that didn't seem to perform any better than some lower clocked intel cpus, and the AMD fans were screaming about things not being optimized for it. And they were correct. K7 was a new processor and proggys certainly weren't compiled for it yet. It took them a while, but we are finally seeing the benefit. Now the P4 is produced and they are laughing. Hmmm...dejavu, but reversed
It's funny to see everyone jump the gun on released products based on their preferences. Fact is no one knows how well it will do until we start seeing some newer programs. One thing intel has over AMD is being able to get backing from program developers almost universally, so we should be seeing some pretty soon....or maybe not, who knows.

I hope you were joking, just about every site out there is Intel dominated, they don't need to use the word Intel, the word cpu is used to mean Intel.
To me, a 1GHz P3 or Athlon are the same speed, I don't consider minor variations to be significant. I think the P3 is ahead in software support, there is little to no Athlon optimization in software out there, what does exist has twice as much SSE support. If the Athlon is ahead in some benchmarks it's due to brute force.
P4 Cons:
-Overclocking, forget it.
-Price of cpus, high.
-Price of ram, high.
-Encourages Rambus, bad news for everybody.
-You have the buy a new case, new ram, new cpu, not upgrade friendly.
--Performance, no bang for buck, brute force approach.
P4 Pros (for Intel):
-Intel forces everyone to upgrade motherboards. Supply of motherboards initially all Intel.
-Intel gets a bit more money by eliminating overclocking.
-Intel takes care of it's Rambus obligations.
-Raises the bar for MHz, forcing competition to deal with marketing bs and compete on a process basis rather than a performance basis.
