  • Ms-Dos Compatibility mode

    Perhaps someone can help here.
A friend installed a Western Digital UDMA 100 30 gig drive in his system.
    Asus A7V motherboard.
It's installed on the Promise controller(drivers loaded in Win 98)
He partioned the drive into 4 sections.
Windows now reports Drivers are in Ms-Dos compatibility mode.
    What's the correction needed here?
    TIA

A restart of Win98, so it can mount the partitions in 32 bit mode

Well, I'm guessing a bit here, but if he made the partitions from a cmd prompt in Win98, he'll just have to restart.

I've seen it before in a couple situations. One situation only required a reboot, no problems there. The other situation was because of incorrect chipset drivers and ide drivers. A new set of drivers fixed that problem (but that was for a TX and 95 gold)

There is a problem with Win9x where after an
init failure of an ide port, the port is
never re-tested and runs in compatibility
mode only. This can happen when you have a
driver-hardware mismatch. After you fix the
missmatch the driver never re-inits and so
            never sees the new driver.
The fix is to delete a registry key. I'ts
been a while, but you might search for
"noide" and see if that key is set.
When I get home I will find the MS page
address relating to the fix for this problem.

Going with Nick L here: Any drivers loaded in config.sys / autoexec.bat?
Usually when Windows reverts back to MS-DOS compatibility mode it has loaded non-Windows drivers at the start-up.

Try renaming config.sys and autoexec.bat to non-executables and reboot.
If you don't load c.sys and a.bat (too lazy to retype ), check in msinfo32 (Start, Run, msinfo32, Enter), tools, system configuartion, Startup tab what unusual things are loaded and uncheck them.

Also check the Environment tab and uncheck anything you don't fancy.
And check under the Advanced button if Force Compatibility Mode disk access hasn't been checked. If it is, uncheck it.

(Btw, anyone know what Deep Sleep is?)

                Jord.
