Need help with a FCPGA Mobo

I need a hand with picking out a new motherboard for my old man. Only specifics I got is that it has to be a Abit board, but I guess I could twist his arm a bit if need. Hes looking at getting a P3-933 chip to replace his BH6/500 combo and wants a new motherboard to go with it. I looked at Abit's site and saw that they are offering a VL6 which is a VIA chipset and the SE6, which is based off the Intel 815E chipset. He already has a TNT2 for a Video card and SB live so the onboard stuff would go unused.

I'm curious to see how good the VIA chipset is in comparison to the 815E. Is there any advanges or disavanges? Hes not going to overclocking his system so thats not a consern so I'm mostly looking for a stable board.

I have heard the Via chipset has more problems than the 815E. I recently bought an ASUS CUSL2 and am very happy with it. No problems of any kind yet. It is very stable even at 155 MHz fsb.

recently I had the chance to fiddle with an Asus CUV4x-M, running an 800-EB ... darn, what a fine piece of hardware !



I'd recommend not to get a 933 CPU, but maybe try a 700E and OC it to an 933EB, i.e. up the FSB to 133MHz.

Well my old man isn't into overclocking so i'm not really looking into that. Its his money so I'm not too worried about it. I'll take a look into the Asus board. I used them before and I've been very happy with them.

just tell him that, if he won't OC, he really is an old man ...

Besides that, a safe bet seems to be the 600E, cos almost all CPUs run fine at 133MHz FSB (=800EB), but you probably knew that before and as you wrote, money doesn't seem to be a topic in this case.
