I'm going back to AMD.

After 2 years of intel i have decided to see what the fuss is about the Thunderbird. But are there strings attached? :-)

Are athlons still really picky with RAM? I got loads of ram that goes to 145 with a P3 should i prepare myself for some problems?

What driver files do i need?

My system will be:

Abit KT7 (non raid)
Thunderbird 1Ghz at >1150
FOP32 HSF
30GB IBM HDD
Some ram :-)
cough Asus geforce2 gts 32mb cough
SBlive
300w AMD PSU

Am i heading for one of those weekends?

There are a few small strings attached still, but nothing that is a major inconvenience. You do need pretty good quality RAM, but even the good stuff is inexpensive lately. Mushkin and Crucial both manufacture very good quality RAM and sell it for very competitive prices.

You do need a good HSF as you have noted, and the FOP32 should do just fine. Be sure to grab some thermal paste to use with it.

And of course it is definately a good idea to get an AMD approved PSU, as you have also noted.

The driver situation has improved over time. The KT133 chipset is actually very stable so I hear, and installing the VIA 4in1's hardly requires even a second thought most of the time. Just be sensible about setting the system up as I'm sure you're aware and you should be fine.

Good Luck!

thanks mate.

I have invested in 'some' memory that i know will work just to get it going. I am going to try the stuff i have aswell just to see if i can get away with it. I dont thin k i could happily run 128mb for long, i have got used to having 384 at my disposal.

I have just got another 3 case fans to help the heatsink do its job so i am hoping that will do. I have bought hdd brackets so i can keep as much room around the CPU as is possible for best cooling.

Does anyone have revommendation for the best 4 in 1 drivers? also which drivers should i have for the Nvidia thingy.

I'm not usually so unprepared, i just went for the athlon on a whim!

Why take the non-RAID? I've just bought two IBM 30Gig HD's and the KT7-RAID's performance is simply AMAZING - I'd never have thought it was that much faster than a single drive.
If you even slightly consider doing TV/Video/ captures at some point in the future then go for the RAID!

For the Via 4in1 I think the 4.25 are the best ones 'till now (haven't tried those new Beta 4.26, though), for the NVidia Detonators it is generally said that the NVidia 6.31 Reference-drivers give the best speed, while some people say that the old 3.84 gives the best overall compatibility/stability. I think, don't sue me if this version number is wrong - it's hard to know all those countless driver revisions even if you have a NVidia based card, and I "only" have a G400 - even though I'm currently hard pressed to get a 32MB Geforce256DDR, they're available at 299 DM (~150 US$) here now - the AsusV6800 with TV-Out!

I have seen a GeForce2GTS in 2D action. Its quality is ok, but noticeably less than my G400, but not enough to really bother me. Haven't seen it in 3D yet, though probably will soon. I have a KT7 non raid and am pretty pleased with it. I've read where the MSI KT7Pro2 is stabler though

i went for the std non raid board just cos it was cheaper. i am on a tight budget for this so i thought i would do without the raid as i only have the one drive for it anyway.

I was concerned myself about the 2d quality of the geforce not being the same as the g400. But as i am keeping the g400 aswell i can use one pc for surfing and stuff and the other for gaming. Again the choice of card comes down to cost. The GF2 was only a few pounds more than the g400max and i dont need dual head.

I have just been reading about the various memory tweaking features available on the kt7. WTF is memory interleaving? I'm sure there will be some sort of explaination in the manual but could some one tell me what it REALLY means :-)
