My BIOS is set to latest from Asus - 1011.
I've tried with Standard VGA driver and it
still won't restart without the reset button so I think it must be a conflict besides the G400 driver.

I had a similar problem that was caused by my anti-virus program(pcCillin)It seems the program added a line to autoexec.bat that caused it.Reming said line cured it.
Discovered this conflict by reading the Readme.file for the anti-virus program.
It seems other anti-virus programs can cause similar conflicts.
        Just a suggestion.Good luck!

I get shutdown errors typically after installing games and some applications and restarting, never from actually powering down. I get a BSOD, with a VCACHE error, and after hitting the space bar, a black screen with white, evenly spaced "pinstripes."

If I hit the restart button, the machine boots as usual. No scandisk or recommendations to enter the OS in safe mode. It's as if it didn't happen.

Both motherboards are part of the Asus P2B series: a P2B-F and a P2B-D. One has a G400 in it, the other doesn't.

Microsoft now have something listed new in the knowledgebase that might explain the failure. See Q242934 on the knowledgebase from their website. There is a new USER.EXE that will fix the problem of applications not shutting down in response to a system broadcast message to all top level windows.

However there is a catch - the bastards are only making this available if you call for technical support, which of course costs money. I'd like to be able to sue MS for a new system case, as my reset button is about to break (I use a multi-boot system).

I have found what has been causing grief
with Windows 98SE shutdown/restart on my system (not a crash with error, just a hang).

I had trouble with TCP/IP finding certain IP addresses (no idea why only certain ones), so I removed and replaced all Network related protocols, etc. When rebooting after removal it worked. By process of elimination I found that NetBEUI was causing Win98 shutdown to hang and also TCP/IP to fail for some IP addresses. With that protocol removed, all of the problems go away. So it looks like something in NetBEUI had become corrupted.

VIA released a prelease of a chipset patch that seems to do the trick - no longer do any of our test systems have the shutdown problem.

I will try to provide more information once it becomes available to me from our ISO testing department.

Thanks for all your great info - but if you have a similar problem - I would suggest that you go knocking on VIA's door.

                Regards,

                Jason

                  I get exception 0E at 0028:C001409B in VXD VMM(01) + 0001309B

i get the above crash always at shutdown/restart and quite often otherwise

I have new USB & IDE drivers (4 in 1)
                  I have 1.6 25 bios
                  Win98SE + shutdown pack
                  PD 6.11 beta

i may go back to Win95B and get the USB upgrade and forget my dual-head for now

my last hope seems to be PD 5.33 or 5.41

                  My M/B is a ECS P6BAT-A+

I also have this VXD error when i try to shutdown my machine, this happens when i dont have via 4in1 drivers installed, but when i have them installed, every game is much slower and i cant get turbogl to work, so i chose not to have vias drivers installed. i'm not 100% sure if this causes the problem, but this is what i've noticed.

Try extracting the original "vdd.vxd" and "vflatd.vxd" to c:\windows\system!
                      And restarting.

WMM32.vxd is often slightly corrupt in w98/se

                      If you don't know how:

                      START-->Run.
                      "SFC"
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

I just had the same VXD error (BSOD) this past weekend after building a system with a Tyan S1854 Trinity 400 and a G400. The G400 was the only card in the system. Turns out that when I installed Win98SE and then the Matrox drivers I would get this BSOD after changing something as simple as the screensaver. The BSOD also happened on shutdown. I installed both the latest drivers and the ones that came with the card. No matter which one I installed the BSOD happened. Well I decided to just install Win98 NOT Win98SE and then the drivers that came with the card and I no longer got the BSOD. It appears that something that Win98SE installs really screws up the G400.
