no bitmap images in windows 2000

I have lost the capability to veiw all my bitmap images in Windows 2000.
Any program or web page which I open which has a bitmap as a image does not show up as a picture. For some reason I have lost the capability to show bitmap images.I can't even open a bitmap wallpaper file Can anyone help me please.

is your bmp files associated to open with mspaint in folder options??
btw I use win98 but the same association should apply!
