  • Need help with ICS please!!!

I am trying to get ICS to work. I have win ME. I can get online with the computer on which the main internet connection is installed and I can access the other computer through the network. I can copy files, but I cant use the frickin internet connection on the ICS client. WHY?? It worked, when win98SE was installed on the host. Is there a way to get it working on me or do I have to reinst 98???

Are there any other (free) was to connect several computers to the same internet access??

ICS on WinMe is the same as on Win98SE

    you can try Nat32.com Nat1000.com Sygate.com etc.

Personally I think ICS is crap... but then I don't like Nat1000 either (that's who M$ bought the technology from). I use Nat32 (works near perfect (as advertised) but Sygate is much easier to install.

Before you do that tho I'd go back and make sure it's configured correctly

What you're saying is that you can't dial in from the client computer, only the ICS "server" computer?

I assume you don't have some kind of firewall running.

Is the ICS server computer set to connect automatically? It is not the default setting in Win9x/ME, so maybe it was turned off when the server was (upgraded)?

Also, did you run the Home Networking Wizard on the client? It seems that you need to do so, even if all the settings that come up are right.

As I recall, if the server is set to connect automatically (via the usual checkbox in the Internet Properties for the dial-up connection) that you will be able to connect from the client as long as the network is running right.

            both wouldnt be too bad.

alright, i can use internet on all computers now, but: on the client I am using some pages wont load (www.amd.com, www.murc.ws <---argh) but i can access the forum because i got it in my favourite folder. HOW? i tried it on my dads computer and it wont work either, but when i use the server, i can access all pages without problems. what the hell is wrong with me/my computers/network or whereever the problem lies????

Are the DNS server IP addresses set up correctly on the clients?

Yeah, everything works fine except for a couple of pages, one client uses the same settings as it did when the server was still 98se, and it worked perfect back then.

Do a tracert to any web page that which doesn't work and write that IP addy down... then from the gateway (what you're calling a server) and do the same... are they the same?

if not, remove (delete or rename, your choice) the "host" file (no extension) from the machine that can't reach the site.

Hey greebe, that tracert thing gave me the idea of using proxy (didnt have to use them before, should have thought of it though) and now it seems to work. Thanks to everyone who posted here, because every reply was a small pushup for my patience and gave me the strength to get through this

If that's the case you should do as I said before... the "hosts" file contains the IP addy and acts as a alternate master DNS entry, so if this exists delete it and the proxy won't be neccessary. Proxy's have a bad tendency of slowing things down.

did delete those host files, didnt do nothing. the proxy is rather fast though, it actually seems faster than it used to be. i can download @ 100kbps, used to be only about 70/80 before.
the german network is the best

PS: once you get it to work...

ill keep trying to get it to work without proxy, but it was important to get my dads computer connected again, and speed isnt that important for him
