  • Mail Mess

Can anyone help me out with a real mess I need to get sorted out at work with regard to email. At present all of our email goes through a single mailbox and then gets filtered out. We have a bunch of PCs all with modems all logging in to our ISP and downloading the same email mail. There is obviously a lot of redundancy here and it ties up the phone lies something rotten. Unfortunately for the time being we are stuck with the setup.

Is there any way I can have one PC dial in and collect all the mail and then serve it out over the LAN to everyone else? It needs to be a Windows NT based solution, currently we use Eudora as email client.

You could install some internet connection sharing tool (win2000 has one, but you can getem for NT as well) and let all PCs use one modem to dial up. it would be slow, but it would only use one line. dont know if that helps.
Nat32.com Nat1000.com Sygate.com were recommended to me when i had a question about ICS

There may be a way if you are only using one email address. If you filter the incoming emails on the one system so that the filters direct the mail to the appropriate folders on other systems through shared drives, then there should be no need to dial up with all of the individual systems. You just need to give the main system permission to write to the correct folder on each subsystem in the lan.

        Ant,

I'm sure that Exchange can do this, but I'm not sure at what cost.

        I also saw this : http://www.tixi.com/uk/products/server.htm

          Ant,

setting up an internal mail server is the way to go. If you're looking for some win32 mailserver, check out this one:

          Mercury(Win32): http://pmail.com/index.cfm

Full featured, free & stable, including dialer, support for domain mailboxes, easy setup, ...

            Give this a try :-

            http://www.winproxy.net/

It will sift mail from a single POP account into seperate mailboxes, based on user definable rules, which can then be accessed from the other PC's via Outlook etc. Acts an Internet Gateway as well.

              Ant,
Depending on how many users you have, it may be a simple as outlook express.
              Create a mail message rule;
Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the To line does not contain 'user_email_address'
and Where the CC line does not contain 'user_email_address'
Do not Download it from the server

You would have to modify it for each PC.
You would also need to add a rule for group mail.
But it would work and costs nothing.
