Oh and just for the record...

There were even times when the CPU would hit 70C and over when just sitting in the BIOS!!!

There was something totally wrong with this chip......

    What do you think?

Sounds like the heat sink didn't make good contact with the core, I would have pulled the plug as soon as I saw that high temps.

      The Rock:
The temp reading from your P3 is from the thermistor imbedded in the core, so even though the temperature sound high your chip should not be in danger.

My Duron 650@900 runs at 43C at full load, at least that's what my in-socket thermistor tells me, it idles at around 39C.

What Heat sinks are you guys using???????

Also get rid of Thermal pads if that's what's on the Heat Sinks and get some arctic Silver.

Please remember to take both pieces of plastic of the thermal pad at the very least. Otherwise you may end up with a fried CPU. I plan on replacing my crap heat sink with a proper one soon. I have seen 50° C on occasion at a mere 850 MHz. Granted it is always ambient of > 25° C, here , sometomes over 30° C. I am using arctic silver of course, this on an Abit KT7 with a Duron 700 that hasn't seen 700 for months. (It has seen mostly 850 with the occasional 950 or 1G when we get a cold front

Thanks for that DC, it's 3° here and it hasn't stopped raining since September!
