If you have clips in 720 pixels width, you should crop them to 704 (=22*32), configure the driver to use DVD Max mode in the DualHead tab and enjoy your DVD backups on your big screen

Xortam: practically all video content is at full PAL/NTSC res. or lower... so that doesn't really leave much for monitor playback

Wombat, the 'latest' DivX ;-) codec is the MS MPEG-4v3 encoder .dll build 3917 ("DivX ;-) High-Motion") and 3920 ("DivX ;-) Low-Motion"), and the directshow filter build 3917. In all these files are a few bytes changed, with the following results:

- the Decoding Quality slider in the directshow filter has been enabled
- the encoding/decoding lock for .AVI files has been removed
- in the encoder .dll files, the max bitrate where scene detection is working has been raised from 540Kb to 6000Kb.
- the FourCC codes in all codecs has been changed to Div3 for Low Motion, and Div4 for High Motion.
- All the Microsoft names have been changed to DivX ;-)

that's all!

unfortunately, I haven't had much luck with the latest BS Player... it will use overlay with the problematic movies on my machine, but it will only do so in 16bpp, just like when you unregister the directshow decoder, and what's even worse, it won't dither properly so I get the feeling it will just 'automatically' use the codec .dll instead of the directshow filter when playing back a problematic file... not completely sure though.

However, the Whistler stuff sounds promising! I'll try to extract the directshow filter from a Whistler version, to see if it doesn't contain the pitch-size bug

ah.. I've found a fix for the DivX problem. It's still in beta, but I've been told that I can post the link to the download tomorrow... be patient

Set your RGB monitor to 720x576 and have another look ...

I think it's related to the video format being in split into component signals (Y-UV in some sub-form), rather than providing an RGB signal.

But maybe it's only my setup with my TV ...

keyframes there. It works at any bitrate in both low and fast motion.

By inserting keyframes at scene changes, you will get more quality in all codecs
at any resolution. FAST motion codec looks very good now, but low motion at higher
bitrates will give you even higher quality than before.

here's a fix for all the MS MPEG-4 problems with not using overlay. There still are some bugs in it, but I guess those will be solved soon.

Many thanks for the link, I have to try that instantly. I have some DVDs reencoded to Divx ;-) to be able to keep them on my HD - I don't like to carry those fragile DVDs with me (my Matrix already has quite some scratches on it's surface). This all are non-multiple of 32 files and thus couldn't be viewed on the G400 - 'till now, I hope.

P.S.: If I were working at RamBus I'd sue the guys ass of, he's stolen my idea for fixing this issue....

... funny you should mention that. I was reading a thread yesterday that covered that very topic of bypassing this color space conversion. The HT folks really like the Radeon HW, if they could only get reliable full-featured drivers. They're trying to get ATI to adjust their drivers to address the HTPC market. Interesting read.
