  • Is it okay to delete all the TEMP folders in Win2k? even a hidden 800mb one?

Is it okay to delete ALL temp folders in Windows 2000?
I am talking about a folder I have on my hard drive, which is about 800mb in size, and hidden. however, it seems to hold allot of temp files I REARELY have used:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Temp

    [it's a hidden folder]
I have around 800mb of files in there, which seems to be temporary files for old and new programs I have installed, is it okay to delete this "temp" folder? or is it something necessary for windows 2000?
there are 800mb I can use, as I am somewhat tight on space right now, but I do not want to delete this folder if it's required for smooth operation of Windows 2000.
Windows 2000 SP1, Linux dual booted on same computer.

    Thank you!

it's safe to delete the contents of that folder!

Applications put their stuff there like when you install a compressed program (like an installshield wizzard). Some programs don't delete their uncompressed install stuff afterwards, leaving you with 800! wasted megabytes in your case.

Temp is called temp as they are always safe to delete.

You can simply right-click on a drive, open Properties and select Disk Cleanup to conveniently remove all the different kinds of temporary files on your system.

Thank you for the reply, I have deleted that folder... and so far so good...
but the strange thing is... that "Disk Cleanup" never took into account these "wasted" 800mb of space... it's strange but true...

That's because Windows Disk Cleanup sees only the files and folders that are visible to it. If a folder is hidden, it won't delete it, not even when you have Delete ALL temp files set.

To work with Windows means you sometimes (about every week to month) have to go out on your harddrive by yourself and delete the temp internet folders under C:\Windows, as well as any other .tmp files you can find (use the Search option).

That is what I usually do, but I just thought it if Windows 2000 went into all the trouble of making this directory and it's sub directories hidden... and no RegFleg to lead into it... maybe these are files that are part of the windows caching system, or somethings that are required for the smooth operating of the OS...
I never thought about UN-Hiding the folder to see if Disk Cleanup can detect it... :O

            But anyway, thank you.
