  • Interesting comment in Tom's Hardware GF3 article

"But jokes aside, NVIDIA is known to work on a core logic (=chipset) anyway and, who knows, the crossbar memory controller might soon enough find its way on motherboards with NVIDIA chipsets. Intel, and VIA beware!"

I really would want to see how much more performance a chipset from nVidia will provide over Intel/AMD/Via's current offerings... guess we'll find out soon enough

Let the Tom's Hardware flames begin!!!

    isochar,

Tom's Hardware is not a well liked site on MURC. Tom is extremely one sided about his hardware, especially when it comes to video cards. Some of the hardcore MURC'ers do not like Tom's Hardware at all.

As for nVidia's 'crossbar memory contoller'...if memory serves correctly, that is part of AMD's HyperTransport bus system. Please correctly me if I'm wrong. This is why Tom say's "...Intel and VIA beware." AMD is not mentioned, because that is their technology.

nVidia licensed it to use in their motherboard chipset that is being used in the X-box. I guess they have also planned on using it in their motherboard chipset logic. So although Intel and Via may need to fear, AMD is still sitting pretty.

I realize Tom isn't liked, but he still pointed out some interesting technology.

I did not know that nVidia licensed the crossbar technology from AMD... so let me rephrase my statement:

I really would want to see how much more performance a chipset from AMD using the Hypertransport will provide over products that don't utilize it.

AMD only plans on using HyperTransport with the Sledgehammer 64-bit CPU's. They may come out with a version for the 32-bit platform, or at least use parts of it like nVidia is doing, but not the whole nine yards.
