NIC causing Windows to pause

    if your getting packet loss, that will affect the init of the cable transciever, (do to nasty packets/re-sends). thinking about what paul siad, I sould say that the initial slow-down/pause is the hardware init, and the secondone the browse-master fight, (you can't really get around this with two machines, except turning it off on the second), I'd check the LM announce option, there's no need for it to be on, its more useful for servers than workstations.
    Do you have a muiltimeter around? because you might want to do a continuity check on the cable, or even get another, remember, flexing the cable is a bad thing(tm).
