  • Network sudenly runs VERY slow

I have a two computer home network with Intel Pro 100+ Management Adapters on ME and all of a sudden it changed from a couple of megs per second performance to a couple of hundred k per second.
Tried the usual network reinstall and background program troubleshooting. All Proset II diagnostics come up OK.
Has anyone had this before and have a solution?

Is this a constant problem or intermittant?

We could be looking at dodgy network cards cable or just a setting in ME thats gone set to the wrong value.
Try forcing both cards to 100mbs full duplex. There should be setting for this under the network card properties.
I had a dodgy realtek card and it's diagnostics said it was fine. No packets being dropped etc. However swapping the card for a 3com solved the problem.

      Pit,

If he is using a hub, setting the nic's to full duplex is not a good idea (maybe he is using a cross cable, he doesn't say).

      Brent,

It could be a dodgy nic like Pit said, but it could also be crosstalk (Is your utp cable close to any electric wiring or other cables?) or just bad cables (Do you get a lot of collision warnings on your hub, if you are using one. Did you try other cables?).

I had a quirky network a little while ago at home - it turned out to be a bit of knackered CAT5 cable. I didn't get any extra collisions or anything, but it was dog slow. I recently ripped out all my network and relaid it and now get over 3MB a second.

          Thanks all,
PIT-the problem is permanent-takes 2 minutes to transfer 1 meg-tried setting to 100 full duplex on peer to peer crossover and a new cable-no difference.
Edski-no collision reports-got a switching hub and new Cat 5 cables yesterday and no improvement-tried every combo of settings in Intel Pro Set II and diagnostics and no improvement or failures reported-still crawling. I moved the cables into the middle of the floor and re-routed them well away from anything but still crawling.
SteveC-any other things you replaced other than the cabling?
Can a NIC easily go bad (fried, etc) in the puter and need to be chucked-how to find out which one it is??????????/
