Just upgraded to 512mb

The memory is Cruical cas2 256mb pc133. I didn't think this would make much differance in speed since I was going from 384mb and only had one program that filled it up (Yep you heard that right). The only differance is that old memory was cas3.
It certainly a lot quicker in win2k haven't tried 98 yet.

I also have 512Mb memory, I noticed some difference from 256Mb in Windows 2000, but not so much in Windows Me

Well, I've noticed slightly higher memory usage since I started Genome on my 256M machines - would you consider it worthwhile?

Maybe when I'm creating nice big desktops for Gurm I'll noticed Photoshop being a tad faster

At this price, I may be able to force myself to go out and get another 256M module for myself, bringing RAM up to 512MB. However, there's RDRAM, DDR and so on, so I don't want to buy obsolete memory technology (even if it is cheap).

I've got 384 running at CAS2, 83 MHz FSB. I really didn't notice any speed increase from 256 to 384, however I did notice a big bump when I went from 128 to 256.

I have yet to come too close to filling up all my memory, as well. Trust me, I've tried to fill it up.

Anybody use Cool Edit Pro much? That thing doesn't make very efficient use of memory IMHO....

Seriously though, I didn't notice any difference in w2k or 98se after 256 either... well, not too much anyway...

My roommate works exclusively with Photoshop and ridiculous amounts of RAM. He claims Photoshop will take every bit of memory you give it. He manipulates advertising images, however, and they're huge.

I hope the KT-133A chipset has breathed some new life into PC133 SDRAM. I guess sooner or later, everything becomes obsolete, but I don't think the P4 is quite ready for the consumer market, and AMD DDR platforms aren't that much faster than the KT-133A. Not enough for most people to justify upgrading motherboard, RAM, CPU, etc.

beleive it or not, i noticed a slight speed increase when i went from 512 to 1024 megs. mine is pc100 @ cas2...roughly 10%.

ironically though, my system takes longer to boot now...win2k is the only os on my computer.

I, as well have stepped it up a couple of notches. 256 to 512. PC133 cas 2 timings. I notice faster boots, and smoother, more silent operation. C drive is a slower HD so this is great. And no more swap file! Wuhooo!

If you want to fill up 384 mb of ram do the following. Buy Fritz6 (Chess proggy) set the hash size to 264mb (Max permitted size also improves playing strengh). Fritz itself likes 64mb so that takes you to 328mb and windoze fills the rest. With 512mb I've now got 124mb free with this program running. Of course you could do the same with Photoshop and a large pic.

I haven't been working much with Photoshop recently, so that would maybe explain my lack of memory usage. I think the highest I've been to is ~240 MB usage, and that was with some programs running while playing Deus Ex.

I can open up a pile of songs in Cool Edit Pro, but it doesn't seem to utilize much memory for them, it mainly just reads the stuff off the disk.

Oh well, better to have too much than to not have enough.

I didn't notice a speed difference per say when I upgraded to 512, but I did notice a difference in load times. When I only had 256 in my system, after playing a large game (UT, D2, EQ, etc.) if I then loaded any program, Netscape, IE, whatever, it would have to reload it from disk.

After upgrading to 512 that no longer happens. I load something to memory once, and until I reboot my computer, or do something that somehow manages to actually eat up all available system memory, I never have to reload anything from disk, it all stays in memory. (this doesn't apply to large games obviously, only to your standard apps)

Thats what I've noticed anyway.

Running at 100MHz ECC disabled

Win98SE manages memory. No min/max.
AGP Aperture: 256MB

1GB dedicated swap file first partition (D on second of two (Secondary) 30GB Maxtor +40 ATA66/7200RPM HDs on Promise Ultra66 Controller card.

The system is very stable. No unusual disk activity beyond what Windows is supposed to do.
