to compensate the different ratios, you need the following calculation

4:3/5:4 = 4*4/5*3 = 16/15 = 1.0667 for PAL
4:3/40:27 = 4*27/3*40 = 9/10 = 0.9 for NTSC

I knew TV pixels weren't square but thought that PC monitors didn't have square pixels as well. Note I was responding to Thundrchez's circle comment.
