  • RAM 100 and 133 mix?

    Hi all,
I currently have 3 sticks of 64 MB PC100 RAM (Generic) on my Asus P3B-F and am thinking about adding another 256 MB (Infeneon). I want a PC133 one because I may go with new mother soon.
Do you guys think it will be OK? I'm interested in running my system at 100 and 133 FSB only, no higher than that.
My current RAM can be overclocked fine since my system is running P3 600@800.
    Any comment would be appreciated.

Should be fine. You just need to check whether your board supports 256mb properly.

should be fine and since infineon rams are some of the finest stuff you'll find for that money you shouldn't have problems with them... there may be one problem though: some boards do not like 256 mb modules, but iirc these times have long gone so it should work flawlessly

As long as your board supports the 256 then you shoudln't have a problem with it. I use the cheapest generic crap I can get my hands on, and I'm currently mixing 1 PC100 128 and 2 PC133 128's, all running at CAS2 (they're all spec'ed out at CAS3) in Win2k....no problems here.

Thanks for your info guys. As with the 256 MB stick, my ASUS P3B-F manual says it can support 256 MB stick. So it should be Ok right?
Someone has this mainboard using 256 MB stick and it's working fine?

I too have a P3B-F, with one 256 MB stick and two 128 MB sticks. What's odd is I've never been able to use all four of my slots (not that I need too). In WinME, with all 4 slots occuppied, I start getting all kinds of out of memory errors (how's that for ironic!). It isn't stick specific. Don't care enough to trouble shoot more, but would be curious to know what happens in your situation.

all win32 consumer OS's (they aren't really 32 bits, more like 16 and a half ) have a error with more than 512 mb ram in them, because they don't have enough resources for the swapfile or so i think... i'm no expert and it's some time ago that i've read it, so take it with a grain of salt...

Win95 and 98 do have problems with large amounts of memory. I don't know about ME though. Full info can be found at microshaft knowledge base article q253912.

Here is my news update as a new 256 MB RAM just arrived.
I couldn't get the Infenion one so I ordered a 256 MB PC133 CAS2 RAM from Crucial on last Thursday's night and got it day (Monday). Not too bad, Crucial.
So far I've not got any problem at all on Windows 2000. Haven't tried on Windows 98 yet.
One question though. Does the order of sticks in the slots matter in term of performance?
Thanks for reading my post again.

I have one PC100 128(322) stick and another PC133(222) one.
It tends to crash in some applications if I put the PC133 stick before the PC100 one.
The CAS latency is set to 3, while the RAS to CAS Delay and RAS Precharge time is controlled by SPD.
Should I disable the SPD controll and set them manually ?
