• Odd access to my machine

Hi guys,

Just ran a 'netstat' on my PC (no reason, I've just never run it before ) and have got the following:

C:\>netstat -a

Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
TCP steve:epmap steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:microsoft-ds steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:1025 steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:1027 steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:2225 steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:3211 steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:3372 steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:4291 steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:8244 steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:netbios-ssn steve:0 LISTENING
TCP steve:3211 205.188.7.248:5190 ESTABLISHED
TCP steve:4289 news2.cableinet.net:nntp TIME_WAIT
TCP steve:4291 news2.cableinet.net:nntp ESTABLISHED
UDP steve:epmap *:*
UDP steve:microsoft-ds *:*
UDP steve:1026 *:*
UDP steve:netbios-ns *:*
UDP steve:netbios-dgm *:*
UDP steve:isakmp *:*

C:\>

It all seems OK, apart from the:

TCP steve:3211 205.188.7.248:5190 ESTABLISHED

bit. Port 5190 I believe is AOL? What's this person doing connected to my PC?

I don't use AOL's instant messenger, but I do use ICQ.... now you mention is, isn't ICQ owned by AOL now?

Not sure about that port, however a friend of mine had some odd connections to his computer. Turned out they were caused by ICQ connecting to an ICQ server somewhere.

Hmm, quick replies while I was typing. ICQ will open direct connections with users, it tends to have a liking for high port numbers.

Steve, it's ICQ. Check Preferences, Connection, Server. 10 to 1 that you're using port 5190 there
Try changing the port number and see what netstat says. Want to make a bet it changes to the portnumber you changed to?
