Finally finally it seems that I've got my windoze 2k back up and running.
It seems that the hard disk "failures" were due to the Hauppauge wintv card sharing with the high point controller.
After the third clean re-install the registry corrupted striaght away and blue screened. Shutting down the machine and moving the card to another slot promptly repaired the installation.
The things I can't understand is why did corruption occur even if there was nothing attached to the high point controller.
Two why didn't the windows 98 disk get trashed as well?
Three why doesn't the seagate scsi tape drive restore the backup reporting a hardware failure yet it will run the same tape perfectly under windoze 98.
Four if I put a tape in under win2k that hasn't got win2k system state saved it reads it happily and will do a re-install.
Five how far do I trust it???
