On the driver side, nVIDAI don't break their drivers the develop their drivers just like Matrox.
There is a lot of leaked nVIDAI reference drivers on the web, but they are all beta drivers and it's up to one self to try them out or not.
I think Matrox should start to leak drivers as well, so they could get more input from the end user instead of an in house developer team.

      Double

If you are prepared to wait then you will be able to buy the Radeon II or whatever else is on the horizon. However they may not be with us soon (aka G800.. something or other) and could well be expensive to start of with.

As for the Kyro II, I still have not heard too much about its 2d quality so I await to see how it performs.

Win2k aside, the Radeon is probably the best all round solution for most people with some versions being bought quite cheaply.

As some people would say it is "'orses for courses".

Paul, I too was experiencing the wavy lines and shimmering. Problem was solved by enabling vsync.

I would say get a Radeon LE, if you can find one. Cheap (80$) and has an impresive overclocking potential (200/200 or even more).

Spent more time searching the Rage3d forums. It seems you can also alter the video bios pins on it, change the clock to whatever settings you want and make it be detected as a regular Radeon, to have Hyper-Z enabled by default.
Though, the poor guys have to use a Rage 128 flashing utility (and even that utility wasn't released by ATI but by some OEM partner of ATI) to flash the bios and some other program to dump the pins on a file.
