Does hitting F5 update the folder contents?

Also, do you have auto-insert notification (called "autoplay" in Win2k) turned off or on?

I had something similar happen here at work with a Smart & Friendly CDR. It would burn CD's just fine. I'd take the CD to another PC (running NT or 2k) I couldn't see some of the files in the folders (like yours).

I couldn't ever figure out what the problem was. We were using NTI Diskmaker Pro. We switched to EZ CD Creator and that didn't help. We finally decided that the CDR was going junk. We purchaed a new Plextor 8x12x32 CDRW and it's burning just fine now.

        Pace,

Just noticed I can't get anywhere from Slim's Network Neighborhood.. have to try that later.

        FrankDC,

Hitting F5 refreshes the view, but the folder remains empty. Autoplay is on.

        --
Now here's something I find quite interesting.. When I go to the "empty" folder in Command Prompt, it says "File not found" underneath the current directory, where there should be ".."
And, I can go to any "missing" directory with the CD command!

I also have a Toshiba SD-M1212 and have the same identical problem under Win98SE. The CD-RW's just won't read. I have installed the UDF reader from Adaptec and still no files. The funny thing is that I can take the same CD-RW to any of my other two machines and read it just fine. They have respectively a 32x Mitsumi CD-ROM and a 12X NEC DVD-ROM.

I wrote to Toshiba tech support last night, but no answer yet. I will post whatever they send me when I get a reply.

I've had that problem with directCD written CD-Rs in both Win9x and Win2k (more pronounced in win2k) Fiddling with DMA sometimes helps, sometimes not. CD-RWs can be quite fickle, I've seen them work now and stop working the next second. Funny I never had a problem reading a disk with the SD-M1212 when I had it. It may have a problem with some copy-protected disks. My brother reported that it wouldn't install UT (that he had "borrowed" from me without my knowledge (serves him right for stealing) but my other brother (who was doing the installing) turned off DMA and installed it successfully(pirate).

I'll try fiddling with the DMA since its been two days now and no response from Toshiba tech support. It strange because I was able to read disks created on an HP writer several months ago, but I had not used it to read RW's since then until this past weekend when I discovered the problem.

Have you tried looking for a firmware update for you R/W from the manufacturer?

I say this cause I remember finding an update to the firmware for my Acer 40x CDROM drive early last year. (but the Ricoh 24x4x4 that I use is a different story!)

                As with anything, good luck!

Well, after ten days and two requests, Toshiba finally sent me a reply to my question about why the SD-M1212 wasn't able to read CD-RW's. I've tried a couple of their suggestions, but I still haven't gotten it working yet. Lucid, have you had any better luck? There are some good ideas here so take a look.

Here is what Toshiba sent me:
                  A.
In your Hardware try making the Toshiba CD-ROM the Master Drive on the secondary port for diagnostic purposes. It should not be slaved to any other Hard-Drive or CD-ROM. This will help determine if it is a compatibility problem.

Here are some other procedures to try:
                  B.
Get the latest updates to the Adaptec Easy CD Creator, You can download there latest update from there web site. It is Ver. 4.03
                  C.
Turn on your computer, go to start > find, Search for SCSI1HLP.VXD
Rename this file to SCSI1HLP.BAK reboot computer to see if this helped.
This has been known to fix problems with Adaptec Easy CD Creator.
                  D.
Make sure you have properly jumpered the CD-ROM on the Toshiba and other drives.
Some other drives have a Master setting and a Master with a Slave attached setting.
                  E.
Try to disable the DMA mode under the CD-ROM setting property. This has help with system locking up when trying to burn a CD. Make sure you Enable the DMA mode when your done or it will effect the performance when you play a DVD movie.
                  F.
Get the latest updates for your motherboard Bus-Mastering chip-set(ie; via, sis, ali).
                  G.
Make sure your CD-ROM is not running in 16-bit mode(DOS). The drivers would be loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, you will need to remark them out(REM).
                  H.
You can increase the Supplemental Cache Size of the CD-ROM to Large, win98 procedures:
                  Cntrl-Panel => System => => Performance => file system => CD-ROM => Supplemental Cache Size.
                  I.
If you have access to another computer, you can try hooking up the CD-ROM to it to see if the same problem exists. This will help to determine if it is a software or hardware problem.

                  J.
If none of the above works, try reinstalling the Adaptec software.

Here is the process that helps most of time. It is definetly
                  worth a shot.

                  1. Uninstall ALL CD burning software through add/remove programs
                  2. Before rebooting, perform a search on the following files in the drive where the OS is installed, and change the extensions to .old if found (e.g.: cdr4vsd.vxd would be cdr4vsd.old)
                  - Cdr4vsd.vxd
                  - Cdr4vsd.sys
                  - Cdr4dll.dll
                  - Cdral.dll
                  - Cdrtc.dll
                  3. Go to C:\program files and remove the Adaptec folder.
                  4. Reboot the system
                  5. Make sure there are no programs running in the background, and disable all icons by the clock on the start bar.
                  6. Reinstall the software, using default install directory
                  7. Reboot the system
                  8. Install the ecdc_v4.02dlx.exe patch. Available at
                  http://www.adaptec.com/support/advis...s/ecdc401.html
                  9. Restart
                  10. Install the dcd3.01up.exe patch. Available at
                  http://www.adaptec.com/support/advis...win25to30.html
                  11. Reboot
                  12. Install the ecdc4.02-dcd3.01_ upv402e patch. Available at
                  http://www.adaptec.com/support/advis...301recupd.html
                  13. Restart one last time.

                  K.
Toshiba does not provide the firmware upgrade for download.
You will need to send the DVD-ROM in.
Please contact Toshiba Disk Product Service Center a 510-651-6798 for Information.
Also you can go to: http://www.pcs-sj.com/ and click on Toshiba RMA.

It looks like I might need the firmware upgrade. I wonder why they don't post the firmware on their web site. Could it be that they are afraid I'll turn my 6x DVD into an 8x or 10x unit by using the "wrong" firmware?

Well, while Toshiba might be slow to answer, at least they did and they gave me lots of suggestions.

                          RAB,

The problem (in my case) would seem to be that the discs have faulty/incomplete file systems, and Win2k doesn't like that. Win9x is more tolerant and can read them fully despite the error/missing data.

I haven't created any CDs after updating the software. However, I have used two different versions of DirectCD at home and at work, so I don't know if that helps. Maybe there's something wrong with the HP CD-writers? (The one at work is 7200i and at home I have 8210e.) But my guess is it's the software..

Still need to try those discs in another Win2k machine though..
