Just thought I might let you know, since many of you seem to be still having trouble with their harddrives and VIA chipsets

This worked for me when all the MS patches and other via drivers didn't work.
Another thing to note you may then run into 686b timing problem once you go to the ultra dma settings. This can cause data corruption so back up your data first.
