  • 300mhz - 4.5x66 or 3x100?

I just figured out that my old PII 266 runs stable @300mhz (or even more).

Does it make any difference which multiplier I use?

using 100mhz fsb should increase memory performance, right?

    thx,

Yes, but it's more likely to cause problems with stability.

Just try it, if it works go even higher. 112MHz should be the theoretical maximum however. The cache won't go past it. Of course your memory will have to support that speed too.

        112 Mhz is the way to go ... your multiplier is locked @ 266 / 66 = 4 .
So if you can get the FSB up to 112 your PII would run @ 4 x 112 = 448 Mhz.
If i remember correctly your PII is a Klamath type and not a Deschute type, the latter being more overclockable.
Of course your ram could hold you back.

the ram runs up to 115 or 120 mhz (tried that with my tbird)

the PII seems not to be locked but I can change the fsb only to 66 or 100 [jumper on the mainboard (GA868BX), softfsb isn't working]

          it runs stable @333 (5x66), @300 (3x100) and @366 (5.5x66, but posts only 133mhz at bootup).
          it crashs @350 (3.5x100).

now what's faster? 333 or 300 with 100fsb? and why does it say 133 when supposed to run @366?

          thx,
          wulfman

Have you tried updating the bios on the Motherboard ? that could be the reason why it's saying 133 instead of 366 simply because speeds higher than 350 is not supported by the Bios.
have you tried counting the number of possible settings for the FSB .. meaning if you have one jumper cap but 3 pins, then there could be some FSB settings available not mentioned in the manual. This was the case with some PII Asus boards among others.
If it's possible then try to increase the VCore to get the CPU stable at higher speeds.
Also make sure your GFX card can handle the higher PCI/AGP bus speeds. If the MB have a AGP multiplier try setting it @ 1/2 or 3/4.
            --------------------------------------------
333 or 300 hmmmm in some cases 333 will be faster in other cases 300 will be faster.
3DMark likes high FSB's and other programs like mhz you will just have to test various apps and games to see what is the best setup with your particular system.

              5.5x100 - strange!

                Heh, strange indeed
Could you try to run a Sandra Mem benchmark ? It would be fun to see how fast 24 MHz SDRAM runs

                  as you wish...

and have a look at the -5V... should that be so?
