  • cas2/ cas3 speed differences

I know this may seem silly but is there a speed difference between cas2 and cas3 memory whilst running at the same clock speed? I recently put some more memory in my machine and the suggested case rating went from 2 to 3

    YES!

    Its a big difference!

80 Mhz mem at cas 2 is faster than 100MHz at cas3

The above is a generalization and not a specific fact.

There is an obvious speed increase in memory benchmarks. The speed-up you see (if you see any) in apps probably won't reflect what you see in the benches.

        Ok, from self-experience (sisoft benches):
        148Mhz cas 3 is faster than 133 Mhz cas2.

Now cas2 is faster than cas3, for sure, but there are other memory settings that when tweaked could give a performance boost much greater than only cas3->cas2. I remember my Gigabyte 7IX... I got good pc100 memory, and at default memory settings, it was a mediocre performer. Setting it to cas2 improved performance by 3-4%. But when tweaking the other 5-6 memory settings (I really forgot the names) the whole system performed around 10% faster. Really. That was with a K7-500, I remember how jaw-dropped I was when only by tweaking bios settings I gained ~250 points in 3dmark200'

          Thanks Chaps.
Looks like I might remove the offending Dimm and see if it makes a marked improvement.

On a fast processor, changing to cas2 memory can be almost as good as increasing the CPU speed by 50Mhz.
