That's a big waste of time if you have a system that can boot from the cd, like his can. Also be aware that creating boot disks aren't always going to work because the system may or may not have floppy, or the system can't boot in the first place in order to open the CDROM to start with.

I don't know what CD he has but I don't believe the multi-version developer copy is bootable (I couldn't get it to boot).

I suppose there are a few "diskless PCs" out there which will always run into that sort of problem.

That's a good point ... if you don't happen to have at least set of DOS diskettes and a floppy (god help you).

The one I got from MSDN booted fine for me.

I'll have to check my system again. I've never booted off of CD (tried maybe twice) even though I've got it set in BIOS (Asus P2B-S). I didn't spend anytime pursuing the CD boot since I could just make floppies. I used to load W2K at work that way back in Beta 1 timeframe because I didn't think my work PCs had the support ("taco" or something like that).

Don't be surprised if it doesn't work. I have seen many posts by Asus users who were having problems booting with that very same CD who were using P2Bxx's.

Just win2k cd's in general. But I first remember seeing posts about this when the multiversion disks came about.

P3Bxx's have no problems, but K7xx do.

Sorry for the break ... but I had to grab a beer and a cigar.
Interesting, I still need to try and boot off of other bootable CDs. I just never spent any time pursuing it because it never posed a problem.

P.S. BTW, the work PCs that didn't CD boot were Compaq's and Dell boxes (I had three boxes running W2K in my cube).

Well, right now im in a Internet Cafe, i had to download the HPT366 drivers, because, as dumb as i am, i didnt copy them to the FAT partition from the floppy. I got myself a full W2K cd ( the one i used to install W2K wasnt bootable ), so i start it, it cant find the HPT366 drivers, i search on the FAT32 partition, check the floppies ... and realized i deleted it after i installed them, coz i d/l the Conexant Soft56K drivers on the same floppy disk ... stoopid

I've long given up to use that terrible HPT366 controller on my Abit BE6 with Windows 2000.

Very unreliable, prone to crashes.. Just sucks badly.

Use the good old onboard controller and forget about that disaster called the HPT366.

You mean go back to UDMA33? Dunno ... maybe, if crashes like this continue to happen. So far so good, i`ve fixed it this time, hope it doesnt happen again ...

... Oh i hate this !!! The @%#$^ing HPT366 driver !!! I reinstalled W2K, went ok, restart, no probs, shutdown. After a couple of hours, turn my PC on and, of course, ERROR!

I`m giving W2K and HPT one more shot, with the Microsfot Certified drivers ... after that, i`m back to Me ...

Yeah, BE_XU IIRC, well its the latest anyway. Frank, do you ahve a BE6 or what? I just read on the MS newsgroups that some guy also had similar probs, so he used not the 1.25.1 W2K drivers, but some older MS certified ones. So i d/l them. I`ll try them out as soon as i get home. Unfortunately, he didnt say whether W2K worked Ok with `em. He just said that W2K couldnt hibernate with them, but i dont need it anyway.
