  • Greebe, More Caps Problems

Got one of my PC's back for warranty, no power.

PC works with another PS, and as I took the bad one out, I heard stuff rattling around in there. Pop it apart, and it looks like a firecracker went off in there, bits of paper and cap case all over. A small 10uf, 50 volt capacitor blew up. Power surge? That's my guess, but what do I know?

BTW, no, I am not going to fix this. Just want a confirm on the probable cause.

Sounds more like it started leaking and thus produced enough heat to cause it to explode. This wouldn't be caused by power surge tho, just a crappy cap under duress.

Be aware that it is not a crime for a cap to pop under duress, it's actually quite acceptable. Now if it was pre-meditated, then you could press charges

My buddy just de-cap-itated his MB. He was putting in a "new" DAT (refurbished, SCSI, 12/24 GB, $189!) and it was a tight fit. The MB appeared fairly dead but after some diagnosing, we were starting to believe that the 250w PS gave up the ghost. He said he was getting some odd readings on some pins last night but this morning he spotted a couple loose caps in his case. He'll try to pick up some replacements locally and get an EE friend to tack them back on.

            LOL Rags, made my day.

It might have gotten a look at Miss Wunder-Baum.

Yeah Mike, I know, but he's pretty squeamish about soldering his MB. Seeing as they're not the micro-caps, he said he may give it a go, but if his friend is handy, he'll just give it to him. My friend has a knack for screwing things up so caution may be in order.
