  • Opinions please...about me new computer...

I'm putting together a new computer for myself and selling off my old (I already have a buyer). I'd just just like some opinions on the specs ... should I get something else ... does it all look good ...? And remember...your opinion matters!

The done deal components (stuff I've already bought):

PIII 750 that I'll o/c to at least 1 GHz.
Step Thermodynamics KODIAK 7000 heatsink/fan combo.
    2 x 256 MB PC133 SDRAM from Crucial...7E, CAS2 part.
Step Thermodynamics Titanium power supply, 605 W dual fan (intake inside case, exhaust to spit the air out).
Addtronics 6898A case (I'm buying a new case for the computer I'm selling, this case is too nice and too modded out to sell).
    60 GB IBM 60GXP
Asus CUSL2-C Black Pearl Spectial Edition.
Plextor 8/4/32. I'll get something better later.
    MS Natural Elite keyboard.

    What can be changed...

Hercules Prophet 4500 64 MB...Kyro II video. I'd like to keep an M card inside, but... Unless the rumored G550 is released very, very soon, what else could I get that's not going to cost a fortune and is not nVidia or ATi?

Sound Blaster Live!, the original full retail version. It's worked like a charm for 3 years, unless some cool new innovations comes out, it's staying. There are a lot of threads going about sound cards, but I'm staying unless someone can convince me otherwise.

3COM 3CR990-TX-97. I've really been itching to try out one of the 3XP NIC's. I hear they are truely amazing! Anyone ever used one before? If I can't get one I'll go with a 3COM 3C905C-TX.

Toshiba 16/40 DVD-ROM. Good drive for a good price. I don't think my wholeseller sells the Pioneer model, so I'll stay with Toshiba unless someone knows of something better.

Cornerstone p1460 monitor...it just looks too pretty to pass up. That and several MURC'ers have given these guys top-notch reviews.

Logitech iFeel Mouseman. It's big, it rumbles and it has second gen optical technology. I may drop the iFeel, but that just seems like a fun technology to play with.

40 GB IBM 60 GXP...yes this means I will have 100 GB of storage in my computer. I'm a freak, what else can I say?

That just about covers it. What do you think?

    Athlon 650
    256 MB PC133 CAS3 from Crucial
87 GB storage from WD & IBM
Matrox G400 (it's not dead yet!)
SB Live! the original full retail, still going strong
Klipsch ProMedia v.2-400, the PC speakers that goes BOOM!

Overclocking...I can't get my Athlon 650 over 700 MHz without the systems going berserk. With a PIII 750 I can push it past 1 GHz easy! The PIII 750 is a 100 MHz fsb chip that is built on current 0.18 micron technologies, so it will reach 1 GHz easy. With the cooler I'm puting on it I may reach 1.1 GHz =))

why not a 900 athlon for the same price as the intel?? you could have kept the same mobo, as well

seems a nice system though(i want 512 megs of ram as well ), its just that i have a preference for amd ever since they brought out their first k6-2 processor

Topha, I doubt't his Athlon 650 is of the socket variety and since there aren't any slotkets for Athlons both would need replacing.

My motherboard is a Slot A board, so I cannot put a new socket Athlon on it. I could use a gold finger device, but I want to junk my old Athlon classic.

I'm building an Athlon system later anyway. I'm just waiting for the AMD 760 MP chipset to come out for the desktop market.

Spend the extra money and get the 60 GB HDD versus 40. This way you have the option to RAID the drives later as they'll be a perfect match.

If I do a RAID it will be SCSI.

That's what I do. Why don't you buy into SCSI now or have you made up your mind to not do RAID with this new system?

$125 for a Matrox Millennium G550 says the boi wonder. Hey Jammy you have the same burner as me, same speakers too. I'm seriously considering the ones on my Windows Desktop (ProMedia 5.1) I like the fact that the sub is more powerful . OK Denty goes to bed now as I had to basically rewrite this post because of typing in utter crap

I agree with Xortam, get a 60gb IBM H/D so you can use it in a RAID. Also buy your RAM now because its sooooo cheap .

The main reason I am going with a 40 GB IDE drive and no RAID is due to money. For a gaming system a RAID is not needed. When I build my server (not a big one, just a pimped out desktop that won't be good for anything but file sharing) I fully intend on having SCSI RAID in there. So for now...40 GB...no RAID. If I could afford it, I would.

The G550 has been quasi announced as of this posting. I need a video card this week or next. So unless the G550 is out next week it will be the Kyro II based Hercules Prophet 4500 OEM version.

No need to say any more.
