You might as well try known high-quality RAM considering today's low prices. It will be worth the small cost and at the least, you'll eliminate RAM as the issue.

It sounds like dodgy ram. Like Greebe says bin it and buy some decent ram. Crucial ram is brilliant one of the best things I bought.

O.k., here's my final post on this topic.
After reading through the AsusP2B-L User's Manual R1.06 (why didn't I do that FIRST?!), I saw info on how my double-sided RAM DIMMs each use 2 rows on the MB...Hmmmm.
I placed the 2 DIMMs in the slots FURTHEST AWAY FROM EACH OTHER.
(I guess I didn't try the RAM "in every possible slot combination", as I stated in my earlier post.)
        After many "musical RAM" episodes,
I have now found that with the DIMMS in Socket1 and Socket4, everthing is rock-solid stable!

        WhooHoo!!!!
Thanks again for the advice, people!

I just insatlled another 256MB stick for a total of 448MB. A lot of operations in Win98SE slowed to a crawl. The first thing I tried was to limit useable ram to 256 and everthing speeded up nicely. I then went and set min and max file cache to 32768 and set useable ram to 448 and I am flying. You might want to try that out.
