  • Win2k startup programs ...

Ok, so this is the "problem". I had PowerTweak 2.0 installed while i was running WinME, so i installed it when i upgraded to Win2k. It didnt work. Well it did, but recognized my Katmai 500 as a Xeon 500, thus screwing up badly. After many futile attempts to make it work, i gave up and uninstalled it.

So now on every bootup, theres an error displayed in the Event Viewer, something like "Couldnt load PowerTweak NT helper". How do i disable that? Meaning where are the startup porgrams located? There isnt anything like it in the Services.

Also, since i installed IIS, i get error messages for :

    W3SVC
    SMTPSVC
    MSFTPSVC

But the server works ?! Is this supposed to be happening?

you have to go to extras, folder options, there is a list where you can check and uncheck all kinds of options, you have to uncheck the option "hide protected system files" (or something like that, i got it in german here), then you have to search for the startup folder, in there you just delete the files you dont want

Thanks for the quick reply Topha, but i allready tried that, and it isnt there ...

I found the key in the Registry, but i cant delete it. It`s in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\ LEGACY_POWERT\

go to systeminformation (startmenu, programs, accessoires, systemprograms, systeminformation), go to software and startup programs, it gives you a list of all autostart programs and their location, maybe that will help

Have u tryed StartupCPL? It allow u to see what loads automatically on your windows 2000 machine and disable what u consider useless.

P.S. If u don't have it and don't find it, send me a mail.

                Go to Device Manager.
Click "View -> Show hidden devices"
You should get a group called "Non-Plug and Play Drivers".
The PowerTweak gadget should be listed here and you should be able to delete it from here.

                That's a lot of shoulds

                    Not really.
Do you have more details on the errors?

Ok, so this is copy-pasted from the Event Viewer:

The server was unable to register the administration tool discovery information. The administration tool may not be able to see this server. The data is the error code.
For additional information specific to this message please visit the Microsoft Online Support site located at: blah blah

So i have an idea. What if, on every boot up, IIS checks if i`m connected to the Net (i`m obviously not, as i`m on 56k, not permanently online) and when it finds out that i`m not, it writes this down as an error.

I get errors similar to those when a particular program or service messes up Win2k and I have to do a cold reset. If those errors are the same as I was getting, then this microsoft support doc should help:
