So what do you all think of ADSL??

Well, I have cable TV and Cable internet with SHaw@home. But I am thinking of getting Bell XpressVue or StarChoice(mini sat. dishes with Digital feeds). However, if I don't go with Shaw for my TV, I have to pay $10 bucks a month more for my internet acess. Buggers. So, I am thinking of ADSL with Telus, the local Telco. They are planning a full digital upgrade real soon, and I am (according to thier little map jobbie on the website www.telus.com) able to get it at my house. It is also cheaper by either $5 or $15 bucks a month. But what are the disadvantages? Only one I can see is that I only get 3 email addys with ADSL and 7 with my Cable. Also, my cable connection has been VERY fast and stable. Really nice.

So, what are your thoughts ??

It all basically depends on the qualtity of Telus (including their support), how far you are from the CO and if there is any noise along the way.

DSLReports is the #1 place to find other user info.

Also, see if you can find anyone else who has it.
Some DSL providers lock their users bandwidth.
For example if the line can carry 1000 Bps they may lock it at 384 because the contract sets that as the minimum, and they take it to mean also the maximum
Southwest Bell, my provider, only does this to people whose lines naturally go over the next price break (1.5 meg). But, then they are locked at 384 BPS even though someone a little farther away from the Central Office might be getting 1499 and not get locked.
Some providers lock all their customers at the contract minimum.
If this is the case it will probably be much slower than your cable connection.

I've been using Telus in Vancouver (west end) since Dec. of last year. Love it. Since getting connected I've had a couple of days where there were some problems (general slowdowns and problems connecting to sites) but they weren't a Telus problem but rather a net problem just over the border. Never had a day where the networks was down.

Most of my friends who use Shaw (or, before them Rogers)have had problems with network outages, inability to get mail, etc. on a pretty constant basis. Although, to be fair to Shaw, most of their internet problems here in BC were inherited from the pathetic service that Rogers had set up.

BTW, if you have a network set up at home you can get a 2nd ip for no extra cost.

For what it's worth, I'm using the 'Professional High Speed Package' which offers speeds of up to 2.5 Mbps download and up to 640 Kbps upload, 5 ip's and 5 email addresses.

I generally get about 2 to 2.2 Mbps download and about 500 to 550 Kbps upload from my location (and that's with usually 2 computers accessing the net at the same time).

I've also found their tech support to be pretty good as well.

I'll keep it all in mind. Shaw is starting to piss me off tho, so this may be a near future issue Buggers. Just got a bill from them with a few little perks in it (for them, not me) that I intend to reverse.

I doubt that you'd be displeased with Telus. It might not offer the theoretical speed of Shaw's cable but it certainly seems to be more reliable.

It depends on the speeds. In this neck of the woods, DSL starts at $50/mo. for 640/160 service. It's stable and reliable, but to get the speeds I really want is unrealistically expensive.

Cable on the other hand gives 1mbit down... but is only one-way in this area.

It's a trade-off.

But in Boston (where we used to live), cable was a no-brainer. $40/mo. for 1.5/512 service.

i cant get adsl or cable in my area and wont for at least another 2 years (BT! )

i am going for satellite internet. they say you get 400kbps, but that is the minimum. a lot get up to 1.25-1.5 mbps during the night. there's no upload (apart from my 56k modem) but it is better than nothing. plus it is only £15/month. 50-170KB/sec is good in my opinion. now to get a 2 way dish so i can set up an ftp

ADSL is a god send here. Oh, the poor souls still stuck with an analog modem or ISDN. It's currently far from being available everywhere. My best friend is eagerly anticipating to finally have ADSL at his place, it's promised to get there during this summer.

Cable is available in more places and is also slightly cheaper, but most cable providers are rather lousy here. There are the exceptions but that's not where I live.

So it really depends on the choices you have. Both could be better than the other depending on how good the provider is.

Hey, I have to pay $199/mo. for my SDSL line. Yes, that's $, but it's a very stable line. Too bad Optimum Online isn't available in my area. Most people easily get 2mbps/500kbps minimum. Some people report 8mbps/1mbps! And..for only $30/month!

I've just requested a looksee if my phoneline is capable of using the 1024kbps downstream and 256kbps upstream I wrote myself in for (ADSL is finally coming to Oosterhout in September ). Price for the package I asked is 110 guilders a month (same ISP I already use, giving me a discount on the subscription and on the installation costs, plus 10 email addys, 30Mb homepage, no caps), which should be around 50 USD

Might be expensive, but it's way better than the 600 to 700 guilders I pay per 2 months for using a telephone modem right now
