OK, yes, my father pays for that, not me. But you got it wrong. It's not 1.1mbps, it's 1.04mbps
As for cable vs. DSL, one is not always better than the other. It very much depends on the providers in your area. Let's say your area has one cable provider, that is overloaded, resulting in crappy speeds for everyone. Then you have a DSL provider who has few customers and as a result, good speeds. So it's best to ask people in your neighborhood how cable or DSL is.

I, too, have finally had it with Shaw@home and their unreliable service. I am now on Telus ADSL and there is no doubt that it is considerably faster than @home athough this of course, has many variables already mentioned above. That I am fairly close to an exchange office(<1000 m) might have something to do with the speed? I bought my modem for $300 and received a $200 credit on my service account. That deal ended May 31. At $34.95/mo its $5 cheaper than Shaw so what more could I ask for.Laurie

Laurie, lately it has been quite good, and they have thier heads out of thier asses as far as customer service goes, so maybe they have delayed it a bit longer. Glad to hear that there is a viable alternative thoAMD XP2100+, 512megs DDR333, ATI Radeon 8500, some other stuff.

As of last night I was finally able to start using DSL. My first impressions are that it's steadier, with lower pings, than what my @Home connection in Virginia was. However, I've contracted with Ameritech for their 'residential' 768/128 connection (in Illinois), and the overall bandwidth does appear noticably lower (just noticable). I haven't actually run a bandwidth test on it yet, so that's subjective vs. objective.
One thing I do know for certain- my pings in UT servers are MUCH better and more stable with this DSL connection than they were using the cable modem, even with my wife using a second PC for web-mail/browsing while I play (using a LinkSys BEFRS11 wideband router to share the single IP).
