I'll ask my little brother he works at a car audio distributor. He seems to go for Alpine for some reason.

I have an Alpine in my Maserati, they are a bit expensive here in Canada

I'm curious to see what he has to say, thanks Fluff!

      Cheers,

Thanks for any info you can come up with Fluff. I haven't spent any time looking at current units except for a brief swing through the department while doing other shopping at Fry's.

Come to think of it ... now I remember I was going to do this before our holiday season road trip. Oh well ... doubt that will happen with everything else going on.

Don't forget the proper way to get good bass: loosen as much bodywork as possible (especially in the trunk area) so that you get that authentic rattling metal sound.

And if you still want a head unit that matches your car's illumination you can choose alpine, maybe be one compatible with your cd-changer; latest models have the option of changing the unit's colour and also all bells and whistles you may think of (but sound is good). You can also buy a small Santa Claus to hang on the inside mirror

My brother want much help as usual.. But Generally he said Sony offers good value for money. Where as Alpine offers better sound quality but you have to pay more.

I like this one personally, from Pioneer. It looks understated.

Seems to be a good head unit and those D/A convertors are a good piece of hardware. Also it has all those features I was thinking of when I mencioned the alpine, those high and low-pass filters are very usefull and give great flexibility to the system. Are you sure it is cheaper than alpine? I must say pioneer doesn't sound worse than alpine to my ears, for it's features this is probably a great choice!
