Of course it is. It's just "arguments" like "If you are serious about your music, you have to buy x" are really tiring.

Maybe what you meant, but I've heard this argument a lot from "Audiophiles" with more money than brains who think everybody should drop five figures into a HiFi system, and people who just can't afford that just have the wrong priorities.

Actually, I am, for instance, hugely dissapointed by "Walking into Clarksdale" by Plant & Palmer. This is not about bitrates and machinery. It's about a ****ed up mix by the producers that make the album painfull to listen too even if the songs themselves are in fact very good. Some of them are.Originally posted by TransformXFunny how some people who are so obsessed about sound, go and buy low quality recordings..
Not sure if this is what you mean by "low quality" recordings however.Join MURCs Distributed Computing effort for Rosetta@Home and help fight Alzheimers, Cancer, Mad Cow disease and rising oil prices.

I think someone with less money actually makes a better audiophile, they scrutinize their components and the value of them more; less impulsive buys. There are guys who will go into a store, see something they like, and buy it right out if they feel they like it.
When I bought my Cambridge 640A I tried about a dozen different amps with almost as many different speakers, brought a few different ones home, and even tried mine out at home for about 3 weeks before I actually paid for it.
You are right - it is really $#%ing stupid when people just drop thousands of dollars on a system - if you take your time with it you have time to figure out if it is something you really want, something that really does sound good, and something that you can afford. A lot of audiophiles get so excited about stereo stuff that they figure everyone should just go lay down thousands of dollars to buy a stereo and it will make them equally excited.
I think people actually waste just as much money on cheap impulsive buys though, like just headin over to a Best Buy type store, dropping a few thousand on a tv they know nothing about, and some cheapo 5.1 setup (this is numberwise comparison, because there will be 10 people that do this as compared to 1 that will be impulsive buying audiophile grade).
I still think that Shanling I posted to start the thread is a great deal if anyone is interested!

Az, OTOH, there are people who can afford a "good" system, spoil $1500 on garbage and do not actually ever listen to music. IMO, anyone who enjoys listening will want to have expensive systems up to some point. There are just many many ppl who buy and do not care. For them, yeah, $1500 is prolly far to much already. Just like a euro 100k car would be spoilt on me.Join MURCs Distributed Computing effort for Rosetta@Home and help fight Alzheimers, Cancer, Mad Cow disease and rising oil prices.

Also, spending money on audio during a midlife crisis is more cost effective than cars or drugs etc, it holds its value a bit better

Actually I find that I most enjoy my music in a car. The grumble of the engine, the wind noises, just cruising along in the desert of Western Australia or through the Asian infested City and so on, adds another dimension to the music - in my personal opinion.Originally posted by UmfriendYep, it is true that I can enjoy music on my car stereo as well. Even though I have all this disturbance of the sound of the car to go with it and the car stereo sucks quality wise. Still, if I _want_ to _listen_ to music, my stereo at home sure gives a bigger bang for the buck.

Guchi, my advice to you is: Buy extremely cheap and bad "hi-fi" equipment and you might just experience the same sensation in your living room!

Maybe its also because you are driving so most of your concentration will to guided towards steering your vehicle, so the music kind of fades into the background.
Oh and it also really depends on what car. I much prefer listening to music in a Honda than a Nissan for instants. I am not being biased in anyway, but its the truth.
