Yes the L2 factor does apply to apps like WORD but in gaming the L2 isn't used so the theory is not relevant.

Heres that PC Gamer Q/A. I have seen this position in other places also but cant find my memory. The big question that you have to ask yourself is why would Intel make the lower price Celery to out perform the PII? I have had both and in the same system overclocked and messed with and still have a PII-333@412 I will make a move when I can get a P3 for cheap ! God knows you need the horses for the G400 I am wondering if I have enough muscle to run @1024x768 @32bit with EB in the new Battlezone2 game...I dont think so. The big bummer

L2 cache does effect gaming performance, just not as much as in Office apps. The CPU and WIndows will automatically store commonly used instructions in the L2 cache, so with a faster cache you get faster performance.

The TNT drivers are heavily optimsed for L2 cache speed, the faster the better. It makes a huge difference on the TNT, I recall folks posting benchmarks who had the early Celerons compared to folks with the 300a's and there was no comparison, scores of 2400 in 3dmark99 lite vs 3200 at one point.

Interesting ...
I think the reason why Celeries really do outperform regular PIIs is that Intel never thought about the OC'ing development that far.
If they did, they'd sell the Celeron at much higher prices or even leave 'em at that price just to hurt the competition.

Another difference between Celery and P2/P3, and this is a SUBJECTIVE difference, meaning I have NO idea how we would quantify it:
Multitasking. My P3-500 runs soooo much better with half a dozen windows open than my Celery 366@550 did.
It switches apps smoother, and the ones in the forground run better despite the TSR's on the taskbar...

yep thats why i switched to a p2 350 at 464 rather than my 300a at 450. intel is planing to up basic l2 catch to 1meg/2meg when im not sure but they are.
personaly im not going to up grade again untill the calimino chipset is out and copermine vs k7 reviews are up. i was a fan of amd for a long time, untill i saw a frame rate comparison k6-2 vs 300a with all the same hard ware except for mainboard /cpus. so for now its the higher price intel for me.

Waiting for g400 to show up, while i go slowly insane. I don't have a warped mind do i?

I don't mean to burst any ones bubble but the latest drivers do make the difference. My Hercules Ultra will do crusher at 1024 x 768 x 32 at 63 fps. I dont know about the color with the G400 but I did have a G200 for year and this looks better than it did.
By the way for demo1 1024 x 768 x 32 83 fps.
