  • Monitor settings page doesn't show up in PD 5.13

    sys. specs :
win95 osr2 ebglish with all patches and win98 fresh install ...
    celeron@450 .. gigabyte 6bxe .. SB16 PnP .. HD quatum fireball ... monitor MAG DX1495 .. MGA-G200 8 Meg SD .. i believe it's oem
    i had driver ver. 4.51 before .. 1st i upgraded my bios from 1.6 to 2.3 and it's now showin 2.3 .. and checked if everything works ok .. 2d ..3d .. ogl .. works as usual ..
then i went to install the new drivers 5.13 ..of course i unistalled using the uninstaller 1st .. there were still some settings left in the registry .. removed'em manually ..then rebooted .. windows found new hw .. installed pci vga compatible adapter .. then rebooted .. installed the latest drives .. drivers .. reboot ..
now the monitor settings tab doesn't show up and worse i'm left with an ugly 60 hz refresh for all my resolution .. the windows monitor tab is there .. tried to change monitor from P'nP using the inf file from mag ( MAG DX1495 ) reboot ... same problem ...
uninstall PD 5.13 .. reinstall again .. same problem .. reinstall over again and choose overrite with default settings ..
    same !!
put another HD and installed win98 fresh install .. then install PD 5.13 .. no go !!
still the standard windows monitor page ... but no matrox monitor settings tab .. and of course no refresh rate higher that 60 ...
did all the above steps with win98 again .. still same ..
even isntalled DX 6.1eng after installing dx6.1core ..
last retry .. booted in win98 with monitor shut down .. and then turn on the monitor .. windows of course tells unknown monitor ...finally the matrox monitor settings shows up and i can get higher than 60 hz ...
rebooted again with monitor on .. u can guess .. back to the same problem !!
am i doing something wrong here ???
is it related to the bios 2.3 ??
both PD 4.51 and PD 5.13 shows indeed bios 2.3 ( 2.3-11 in PD 5.13)
    should i go back to bios 1.6 ? install bios 2.2 ? reinstall bios 2.3 ??
this happens in both win95 osr2 and win98 fresh installed !!
any help is very very aprrciated ...
BTW it seems that most applications run ok ..d3d and ogl .. but performance decreased for d3d and same performance for ogl !! and yes i did the vsync off for d3d ... don't think it affects ogl ..

Hi. I had the same problem when upgrading to Win98. It was cleared by deleting from control panel an extra "PCI VGA adapter" or something like that.

So, go to deveice manager and check if you have anything else than the Matrox card there, and then just calmly delete it.

Umm, does Task Manager show that the Powerdesk software is running after installing PD5 and rebooting? I think that if the PD isn't running then you won't get those extra tabs into Display Properties.

Arbymo looking at your long list of frustration the one thing that seems to be missing is running at the normal clock speed for your CPU and card.
Try removing all the overclocking and then see if it still sticks two fingers up.
Another question what other goodies have you got in your PC. Powerdesk maynot like them. Remove them all and try re-installing from scratch without these fitted. It it goes okay re-install them one by one and see what happens.
After that your going down to sillies.
Reload your bios default settings. Or look for a newer motherboard bios.
The new powerdesk may use a different part of memory so your physical memory maybe faulty.
The card itself maybe faulty, do you know anyone that has another G200 you can try or a friendly shop that will test it for you.
Do you load himem emm386 from the config.sys if so remove them. If you need to work in Dos do a seperate menu system.

                wait a minute ...

Arbymo, you said you had more than one entry under 'xxx\class\display\'.

Do you have more than one gfx-card installed right now ?

If not, you might use the uninstaller, boot into safe mode, enter your registry, delete those multiple entries, reboot and THEN install PD5.13 ...

If you have more than one gfx-card, you should look into your MoBo bios and change the VGA boot sequence (is mostly defaulted to PCI/AGP and thus uses any PCI gfx-card as primary display device).

There seems to be something funny with this tab. With me initially the tab was missing but after clicking around a bit it suddenly appeared. It seems comfy now. :|

The PIT : i normally run the G200 at default speed .. i only overclock when i play games .. so all this happnes at the default clock.
for the processor i don't the relation ?? it's been runnig stable for months now .. and never gave me problem ..maybee i'll try that too .. just for the fun of it
in my first post i said that i also tried a fresh install of win98 .. from scratch .. i just did another one for win95b from scratch too .. didn't install any program .. no idm bm drivers even .. the only thing i didn't bother with is the SB16 PnP in the pc as it's a standard card and win95 has already built in drievr for it .. and even dx install new drivers for it ..
i didn't load default bios .. i'll try that also .. didn't flash the mobo bios lately .. i got the new bios file .. but what the heck ?? Bios upgrades for mobo or vga cards NEVER solved any problem i had !!
i don't use dos and don't anything there
for the card being defective .. hmmm .. maybee .. i'll try to swap another card but this one will take some time ..
Maggi : i did that .. deleted all display entires in the registry .. even deleted the monitor entry in the enum key .. to the point that nothing was showing in the device manager neither the registry about my display or monitor
i only have one gfx card and yes the bios is set to boot from agp then pci .
i found a partial solution for this is to boot each time with monitor turned off !! and then turn it on afetr windows loads .. this way i have monitor settings page and i have all refresh available .. !!

                    IMHO ..
                    1. My monitor Mag DX1495 has something bad in it's dcc signal ?? but it worked perfectly with 6 vga cards before and still work with G200 driver 4.51.
                    2. Something wrong with my card dcc detection circuit ?? same as above .. it works with 4.51 prfect .
                    3. Something wrong in the card bios .. i updated it from 1.6 to 2.3 before installing the new drivers and tested it with driver 4.51 .. worked ok .. but didn't solve any of my problems .. so maybee something went wrong during the bios upgrade that makes 5.13 screw up ?? i think - someone correct me if i'm wrong - the bios of the vga card is responsible of the resolution and refresh rate stuff ?? highly unliky this is the problem .
                    4. the most likely problem .. some kinda incompatibilty between new drivers and windows display properties that show up on some systems ( maybee untested systems or monitors ? )
the PD integration in windows display properties is indeed very cool ..but maybee it didn't mature yet .. and matrox and microsoft hates each others ??
also i have further further notes in the other thread "http://forums.gagames.com/forums/Forum109/HTML/002018.html"
                    later dudes

The PIT : Good one ..
maybee i'll just throw it from the window hoping it'll hit someone's head and kill so that i got into jail and forget about this whole SH*T
seriously i was about to pull out the SB ..but the weather was too hot and didn't want to spend more effort

Arbymo. When all else fails, insurance the damn thing for storm damage get some three phase mains and plug into that and then say it got damaged by a near lightning strike.
Or find someone you don't like and stick it somewhere the sun don't shine.
Or if your religous offer as a sun sacifrice or something.
On a more serious note have you tried it without the blaster.
Damn it I forgot this darn thing is case sensitive.
Less serious it's not running the same software this server does???
                        Hope you fix it anyway.
