  • 16MB vs 32MB

A few times I have seen mentioned that the 32MB G400 is the one to go for, well this article may help change your mind, I have a 16MB version, and may get a MAX, but if the MAX is out of your league, this'll help save some dough.

It's not too suprising, since most games don't push the 16MB barrier at the moment. The 32MB will help when very large texture games come out (sometime before Christmas, I'd think), at which point we'll see a boost for cards that can support the textures on the card vs. those that have to go AGP (setting aside those that support texture compression--wow just think Savage4 w/about 120+MB of textures in 32MB card memory).

Given the difference in cost (about $40 for the TNT2's, $30 for the G400's) it might be worth it for some people on a tight budget, although if you've only got $100 to spend you might get a Diamond Stealth III S540, since you probably won't have a real racy CPU to go w/the TNT2. Of course, for $20 more you can get an OEM G400 /16MB. Ah, it's good to have choices, eh?

Is it just me or does the comparison of the G400s on the main page give the 16MB G400 better scores than the G400 w/ 32MB? Or am I reading it incorrectly?

Ahh, but in Australia, the difference is $100 AUD, or about $66 USD, so the cost factor is more significant!

          Hi,

I bought the G400 - 16MB because of the test-results over at Matrox. The difference isn't very much, so I decided 2 buy this one.
And because there was / is nothing else over here in Holland.
Call every day, but NOPE. No G400 -32 MB or the MAX.

I think I will B buying a 32 Megger instead, because of the large texture games (Quake III).. Maybe the MAX......

U can relax now, the MAX is in control
'cuz when I go, I go, I go 2 The MAX....

To me, 32MB means you can tell AGP to go take a hike, the most textures in a game I have read about was 40MB, for the entire game.

So, folks with slower computers should really get the 32MB version of the card, espeically if they can't get AGP to work properly.

Without having 32MB gfx RAM onboard, you won't be able to use 1920x1440x32bpp with triple buffering enabled

I used that setting in 3D Mark 99 MAX and the readout said ~10MB per buffer, leaving ~2MB 'free' for all the other stuff
