  • Enabling AGP 2x

Hi, i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong here, but whenever i check my system with sisoft sandra, it shows that my agp bus is running at 1x.

I just recently replaced my LX motherboard with a new BX one, and I'm not getting any preformance increases. I thought AGP 2x would give me at least a little preformance increase.

I've tried the registry hacks and everything, but nothing seems to be working. I can't seem to get AGP 2x mode... Can anyone help me out?

I have a G400 regular on a p2-333 with a ecs p6bx-a+ motherboard... i know probably not a lot of people have this board, but it uses the Intel 440bx chipset, so it should support agp 2x right?

ps. Is there any other way of checking if my video card IS using agp 2x?

    Grab Ant's registry patches from <A HREF="http://www.murc.ws/Utils/PD5RegHacks.zip"target=_new>here</A>

and try 'DefaultAGP.reg' first (double click and confirm, then reboot)

if that doesn't help, come back and report ...

Yeah, I tried the registry hacks. All three of them (default, forced 1x, forced 2x) None of them seem to be working.

I've also recently downloaded powerstrip and it confirms the same thing in the system information section under the windows tab (details button). It says that AGP VGA adpater is using agp 1x transfers.

Could this be a motherboard problem? os problem? or video card problem?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

OK.. Ok... i finally got agp 2x to work. It was OS problem. I did a fresh install of Windows 98 and now my software confirms that the agp is indeed transfering at 2x.

But alas.. another problem. I can't run any games anymore when agp 2x is enabled. Most games (opengl and directx) just freeze up in a while when i run them. Sometimes windows explorer freezes up too. Anyone know if I have a bad setting in bios or something? Everything seems to be fine if I force it to run at 1x.

        I have elitegroup p6bx-a+ motherboard, p2-333, G400, and 96mb ram. Any suggestions?

It could just be that your mobo can't handle 2x with this card. I wouldn't worry about it too much. 2x really doesn't do anything for you in real life.

When does AGP 2x kick in then? From what i've heard, it enables data to be transferred both from the card and to the card simultaneously.

So it has no effect on other stuff like games speeds? (fps)

The only place 2x will show any speed improvement is on large textures, as in 3dmark99Max benchmarks. No games today use large enough textures to fully utilize 1x, much less 2x transfers. Someday, when 3dfx pulls their head out, and starts making real AGP cards, then the game industry will use larger textures...
