  • Need Advice! What cpu to get?

    Hi,
I presently have a P2-350... I've been told that it wouldnt be enough to run a g400, so I considered another option (I'm out of cash). I could sell my p2-350 and my mobo for the same price I could get a Celeron 366 and a Abit Bx6 2.0 (oc'ed @550). But, then again, I heard that celeron are bad for g400 before of their limited cache. What do u think? Also, what are my chances of successfully overclocking the cel366@550 with that mobo?

    Thanks!!

Stick with your P2-350 -- this processor was the default minimum testbed for Matrox G4 QA. Nothing lower though.

I have a P2-266 and am waiting for the Celery 533 (late fall) or the P3-500 prices to drop. Late Fall is when I plan on getting my G400 anyway (VERY HAPPY WITH MY G200) and prices on everything will be lower then. (I don't O/C.)

Always try to at least DOUBLE your processor speed. Anything less is not that much of an increase to justify the expense.

      Heirauqs,

Your P2 350 should be fine for now. Have you ever tried to overclock it higher than it is? Anyway, next month the PIII 600 and the AMD Athlon hits, so expect some serious price cuts. Personally, I would simply try to overclock your P2 higher until the Coppermine P3's and Athlons come down to a more consumer friendly price.

Try to push your P2-350 even higher. If you bought your processor in the first few weeks in the P2-350 production, Tape the pin B21 and then you would be able to get past 400mhz. (B21 meaning, the twenty-first pin on the B side) I'm using scotch tape right now and I haven't had any problems for over 2months with my processor running at 412mhz

It sounds like what you have is fine. But if for some reason you change your mind and decide to upgrade, there is a price drop expected some time in August.

Well, the thing is, I found someone who could sell me a Abit BH6 and a pretested Celeron 366 @550 2.0v, for 340$ canadian, and I could sell my actual motherboard and my P2-350 for 300$... so I thought $40 for 200 mhz was a good thing no? it's 0,20$ per mhz...

                  Heirauqs,
Buy a bh6 or other good MB and overcklock what you've got. If you don't know what kind of motherboard you have you most likely don't have the manual and won't be able to put in a new processor anyway.
bh6s are only about $98 US.
                  chuck

ps Are you shure you could get that price for your old parts?

i'm sorry, I made a clear mistake in my last reply. The prices are in canadian dollars. So I'd have to pay 220$us and I'd receive 200$us. I just found a pretested cpu cel 366 @550 for 98$, so I'll get that and a bh6 for another 100$, so I wont have to pay anything! :-)

By the way, I finally found out what mobo I have... it's a supermicro P6SBA... never heard about these motherboards? Me neither!!

Thanks everyone for replying, you're the best!

Heirauqs check out overclockers.com i am running a p2350 in a abit bh6 mainboard at 450 with no problems. check the numbers on your cpu and compare them to the ones on the cpu data base. see what your chances are for running at 450 or higher are. i am waiting to see what the p3 coppermine's vs the athalon are like compared to each other before buying
the next gen. if you cant get your p2 to run as fast as you like you could still get the Celeron 366. i would wait a little longer and see what is comeing from both amd and intel.
