  • CPU Overhead for Dual Display

    Hi,
Just wondering what the difference is in CPU overhead between running an AGP card and a PCI card versus a dual head G400 MAX.
I am a day trader and am picking up a second monitor next week. I would like to be able to run my quotes/tickers (java applets) on my smaller 17" monitor and all my orders and reading on my new 19" monitor. It is unlikely that I will be using dual display for Photoshop or games (although games could appeal to me later ).
Since I am getting my new monitor next week, I am very tempted to just get an Asus V3800 TNT2 Ultra Deluxe and pair it with a cheapy ATI PCI card for the secondary display. Does anyone have any experience with the AGP/PCI configuration? Do you get a huge performance hit with AGP/PCI if you are just running browsers with applets?
    My system:
    P2-450
    320 meg RAM
    Abit BH6
    SB Live Value
    Creative Banshee
    Mag 17" DX 700T
    Samsung 900 IFT
    Fujitsu 17.3 Gig
    Fujitsu 8.4 Gig

    Thanks for any help,
    Raymond

Hi, I have that kind of configuration. I reslly don't know about heavy applications, butin normal work this system works fine. And when I play D3D-games it uses the first display and everything that was in the second display remains there, so I can play and follow IRC or something in the second. I don't believe that there is much loss of computer time. Only if you move a window from screen to screen or keep a window in both screens at the same time, it might slow the computer a little bit.
The reason (one of them) why I want G400 is that OGl refuses to work if I have Dual-Display selected. (BTW I used windows98 then, now I have 98SE, but haven't tried this yet) So I have to deactivate Dualdisplay if I want to do anything with OpenGl. I don't know why it doesn't work. Is it something in Windows, or DX or og-drivers or is it a bug (feature), anyone?
And some applications refuse to go to the second display. ICQ-window, for example. I think G400 would be better choice. Then it (according to everything I have read here) would work right. AND you would have one of the best GAdapters there is.

      Hello Wraith,
Thanks for the info. That is what I was looking for. You said that your ICQ window won't move to the second display? Do you mean it just gets stuck at the edge of the primary display?
So you have problems with Open GL? Does that mean every time you want to play Half Life or Quake, you have to switch Multi Monitor off before the game will start? That is definitely a bit of a pain.

What do you mean by GAdpater?

      Thanks again,
      Raymond

Yes, you need to turn off the dual head for many games with the current drivers at the moment.
        GAdapter - Graphics Adapter
And ICQ will not go to the second monitor...

        Cheers,

        Steve
