  • Prices on G400's

    Hi guys,

I have been looking at video card prices in my area, and am wondering what you all think of these prices for G400s which I found at some computer shops:

    OEM G400 16 MB Single head - $129
    G400 32 MB Dual head - $184

Also, I was told by a sales person that an OEM G400 only comes in Single Head. Is this true?

Thanks for your comments and what you think,
    Joseph

Hmm, those prices are pretty similar to what I got. I got mine from Essencom for 170 plus shipping. No, G400 OEM cards do not come in just single head forms. They come in 3 kinds that I know of: 16Mb DH, 16 SH, and 32Mb DH. Hope this helps

The prices are for retail tho...

I paid $285 canadian for my OEM G400 32mb DualHead, ant the 16mb SH was 199$.

but I'm pretty sure there is:

        SH & DH 16mb
        SH & DH 32mb
        DH MAX 32mb

        all oem or retail

        but I may be wrong...
Asus K7M, Athlon 500 (sometimes at 550), G400 32mb DH, SB Live! Value, Optiquest 17" V73, Western Digital Expert 13.6 7200rpm, Datatrain DC154 14", Yamaha 4416s, STB Tv Tuner, TekRam SCSI card, 128MB RAM, Cambrige PCworks 4pt surround, Lexmark 5700, SupraExpress 56k), RealTek ethernet card.

Well, I did order a OEM G400 32mb dualhead, so I guess the information he gave u is wrong. But maybe HE can only get OEM singlehead, tho...

          ask him...

So what do you think, is $129 US worth it for a 16MB G400 single-head which is found at a local shop.

As always, thanks for you comments and suggestions!

$129 U.S. is, I'd say, a pretty good deal. When checking the prices from my supplier (this would be about a week ago now), they we offering $186 for a Single Head 16Meg, and I paid $245 for a Single Head 32Meg. If you approximate the Canadian/US exchange rate to 1.5 Canadian dollars for every single U.S. dollar, $129x1.5=$193.50 Canadian. That's less than $10 different.

Price vs Performance & features, you may want to consider OEM version of 3Dfx's Voodoo3 3000(/w TVout). I've seen it as low as $200 Canadian - so it has to be a pretty good price U.S. But if you a crisp display and awesome 32bit colour, Matrox is your only solution.

I'm a patient guy, the OpenGL drivers can only improve, and there is nothing better on the market for Direct3D features.

              Anyway, Good luck

                One other thing:
I am helping my friend build a system and besides the CPU, finding the right video card is the next hardest component. If you guys could help me figure out which video card would be good in this situation, thanks:

He wants to get a Celeron 366, and is planning on o'clocking it to 550 MHz.

His options for video cards are as follows:
                1)Hercules Dynamite TNT2 16 MB
                2)Guillemot Xentor Ultra 32 MB
                3)Matrox G400 16 MB Single-head

the only thing is that he wants to use his older 15" monitor which isn't so great, so he won't be using any resolution greater than 800x600.

Also, if the cpu he gets doesn't overclock, leaving him stuck at 366 MHz, then what would be the best video card for the system.

please share your thoughts and info

                thanks again,
                -Joseph
