philstat, can you turn off any unused ports ie com one and two the secondary ide chanle this will free up some irq's. also you should be able to change the irq asignments of the pci slots in you bios (under pnp/pci setup) change it from auto to manule then change irq asignments. i have had problems with irq setting and diamond sound cards before. you can also try disableing the midi funtion in the device manager that will free up an irq too (i have seen diamond cards eat as many as 3 irq's in some system boards (shuttle)

i don't know what im going to bitch about now that the avp patch is out.

1.get rid of the usb from the bios (if you have no usb devices leave it that way until you do)reassign irq to this thru bios after video card is working.
2.check to see if the bios will allow you to assign pci slots irqs.
if so assign the sound card an unused irq, i like irq 10
3. to move the sound card to irq10 you should be able to do this from bios. if irq 10 is assigned to some thing assign it free one. the sound card usualy like irq5 thru 12. try not to share the video cards irq with any thin is a pretty good rule of thumb.
more details of your machines irq assignement and bios will help us find you a solution.

Definatly get that sound card off the same IRQ as the G400. The best way to do this is in the PnP section of your BIOS. In there, hopefully you will have the options to directly assign pci1, pci2, etc. specific IRQs. Unfortunatly, not all BIOSs have this, aspecially in pre-builts like Compaqs.
Also, most mobos will force one of the PCI slots (usually PCI1) to share an IRQ with the AGP card. It may be neccesary to move the sound card to another PCI slot.
What kind of motherboard is this?

Where do I go to find my bios and also where to I see what type of mother board I have Im pretty sure it s the Intel 440BX. ALready tried moving sound card to different slots on my MB it still puts it back into IRQ 11, where and how do I get to my bios?

Most bioses are accessed by hitting the delete key while booting up. I have seen a lot of different ones though....some are f1, some are f10. Some have "softmenu" bioses that use software to contol the settings, rather than hitting delete while booting.
The Intel 440BX is a chipset that is used on tons of different motherboards, which might use any of the above mentioned for bios control...

do you have a spare sound card that you can plug in to see if it goes to another irq?

Just a few ideas. First let me say I sympathize with you and these type of problems.
1. You may be in the unfortunate situation of a hardware compatibility problem with the G400 and the MX300. Sometimes cards just do not like to share the same IRQ, eventhough the BIOS and OS are happy with it. This is relfected in your symptoms:OS runs fine just a few "non reproducible" glitches when you try to push one (or both) of the cards. I note here that your MX300 actually needs to use two IRQs. I have a Soundblaster PCI128 and it only uses one IRQ, leaving my video card and the steering place holder on IRQ 11. If you can find a cheap creative card (borrow one if you can) replace the MX300 with the SB card and see if this fixes your problems.
2. IMHO Becuase windows is a PNP OS, you should not really try to modify IRQ assignments from the bios. After freeing up IRQs from com1 (careful your mouse might be using this com port) and com2 and the USB (even disable LPT1 is you have to) by "removing" them from your hardware setup, go to the MX300 items listed in the device manager under "system" in the control panel. Under the resources tab, you should see two parameters, IRQ and memory acess settings. Deselect "use automatic settings" and try different basic configutation settings (1, 2.....) one of which should let you use a now free IRQ. Then reboot and see if this fixed your problem.
3. I see no reason why your card should ever get hot enough to give off a burning smell. The fact that this has already happened a few times to you suggests to me that the chip may have already been damaged. In any case, I would demand a new card from Matrox simply based on the overheating.
Hope some of this helps.

Andrew, thanks for the advice I will be out for a day and I will give your advice a shot on Friday and will post my findings as far as heat on card I have vented the casing much better and have not had the heat problem since, though case was vented well in the first place inspected card and seen no visible damamge if not fixed this by Friday going to contact Matrox and askesd to swap card out, the G400 shouldnt be this difficult for customers with the Mx300 to install, doesnt make sense the two should be able to coincide together, will put findings up Friday, have a good night, thanks for your help!
