• Quick Technical DVD Question

    Folks,

Is the Matrox DVD player specifically optimized for the G400 hardware? Or is it just a OEM-graphiced Divicore player? I'm just curious, since I have a few other players, at least one of which I'd prefer to be running (ATI's, hehe) instead.

So is there any "special" hardware assist going on that doesn't go on in say standard PowerDVD or Cinemaster?

    Good question. Here's another.

I need to know if the software player can decode AC-3 audio, and send it out intact through my SBLive's SPDIF out to my AC-3 receiver. I don't want to have to get a Dxr3.

      1st person's question:

No, I don't believe the Matrox player is optimized for the G400. But, you say you like the ATI player? They're the same. The engine itself is called "Software Cinemaster." The company that produces it has gone through two different name changes in the last few months! Originally known as Quadrant International, changed to Divicore, and is now known as Ravisent Technologies Inc. http://www.ravisent.com/ (The Divicore name musta had a trademark issue or something...)

Anyway, ATI, and others often produce a new front end, (haven't seen Matrox's, so don't know if they're reusing one of the others), but for those two players, the backend, or engine is the same: Software Cinemaster.

For the second person's question: I believe (but not completely sure) the latest engine 1.0.32 supports AC3 out w/ the SB Live card. I've read the Matrox card is coming w/ the 1.0.29 engine, but you can find the files you need to replace on various warez websites. Here's a decent starting point: http://www.dvdsoft.de/dvdsoft.html You may also need the "Region Selector 1.93" software to turn on AC3. Region Selector will also tell you what version engine you're using.

      Hope this helps.
