    Ragsdale , i get with my tnt2ultra (170/210) and my PIII 527 (117/3 PCI , AGP FSB *2/3) in 3dmark99max at 1600*1200*32bit , 24 bit Z-Buffer , triple buffering and vsync off (prerender only 1 frame (you get this option when poweruser=1 in registry)) 2159 3DMARKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
(and i used the 2.08 drivers and not the 1.80 drivers !)

No matter what i try i will NOT REACH this number with my g400max (not overclocked) !

(i have tried everything : changing amount of RAM sticks , changing FSB , changing bios values , changing agp modes (1x or 2x) , flashing new g400max bios ....etc --> the g400max IS ALWAYS SLOWER THAN A TNT2ULTRA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

My conclusion : whenever you read that a g400max has superior direct3d performance IT IS WRONG !!!!

I am SURE that no one here in this forum will get over the 2200 3dmark barrier with the g400max and 5,13 drivers !

If someone says that a g400max has superior direct3d performance i would at least expect 2500 3dmarks !

      tombman,
With the 2.08 reference drivers, I got BELOW(!!!)1700. I did not use any reg-hacks, vsync was always disabled. I did not use any different setup than paul, other than Mo.Bo. and Hard drive. I think that my way is a more fair comparison. Oh, I am sure there are reg. hacks that can be done to make the Max appear faster in 3DMark, but that is not an apples-to-apples comparison, now is it? Also, Paul used a 32 bit zbuffer, and DID NOT overclock his card to max levels. Remember, I was using a TNT2ultra at default speed. He simply smoked my scores. END OF STORY.
And there are better D3D measures out there than 3dMark, too

        Hey, ALBPM,

I hope you do not waste your efforts here, sounds like tombman fells pretty comfortable in his grave, spilling impertinence and trying to hide lack of substance in loads of exclamation marks.
Tomby, why don't you just have another Prozac and relax. I'm sure you might get answers if you simply asked. If your inability to solve your problem only makes you piss at other people, where is the point for them to even answer?

        bye,
        Hellmut

4-Use only one stick of memory(PC100, 8ns, non ECC)
5-Remove all additional cards(network, sound, modem, everything, even ISA)
          6-Fresh Install 98(not SE)
7-Install PowerDesk 5.13 (Do not use any registry hacks[I don't care if you can't get AGP2x without them, DON'T USE THEM])

            [/german]

I just told hellmut to shut up if he has no benchmarks for me !
I am only interested in facts , numbers !!
            I am just disappointed of how weak the g400max performs ... i expected 2500 3dmarks .
By the time the drivers become enough powerful to show the real potential of the g400max there will be a new generation of 3d accelerators on the market and THAT is really pissing me off !!!!

I really think you had the wrong impression of the G400 Max when you first ordered it. In certain games the Max will come out on top and on others the TNT2 Ultra will. For example the Max will smoke in the TNT2 Ultra in forsaken because of it's duel memory bus and the way Forsaken handle it's textures. However in other games the TNT2 Ultra will come out on top. Just because the Max doesn't get as fast of a 3dMark score as you would like, doesn't make it a bad or even slow card. Another thing is that is seems it's harder to overclock most G400 Max's then it is to overclock a TNT2 Ultra. However, if you buy either it's sometimes just luck of the draw, if you get one that will overclock well or not. You also seem to be making a big deal of scores at 1600x1200x32 which really isn't a viable option with most games with this generation of 3d cards. While I've noticed some single player games will play okay at 1600x1200, it's another story when you play multiplayer games like Q3test! Heck, a lot of people don't even own monitor's capable of doing 1600x1200 very well or at all. I do love the way things look at 1600x1200, and do think it will be real option as the next generation of 3d cards come out and the prices continue to fall on 19" monitor or bigger. The Max should be just fine for playing at 1024x786 or even 1280x960 for most users for now.
If your not happy with your G400, then simple just send it back and start playing games or something. Heck my second computer which has a G200 Marvel-TV in it (I have a G400 Max coming to replace it) and it still plays most games well enough in my opinion. For a while there when I only had a G200 and Voodoo2 SLI, I ended up taking out the Voodoo2's because I would rather have the better visual quality then faster frame rates. Plus the pass through cable made my monitor look blurry. *yuck*

                Hi Guys,

                Nice Web Site Gen3D !!
Well tombman, looks like you have the best of everything. You have a TNT2 Ultra and a G400!!! I'd be pretty pleased with myself with all those options available.
Heheheh, so what are you so upset about?? No, the G400 hasn't reached full potential yet. It's only on it's first set of drivers. I know that Matrox is working hard on improvements and am comfortable hanging on to this card for quite awhile. Besides it has many other useful fuctions such as the Dual-Head which really useful at work.

So enjoy your TNT it sounds like you just need the FPS anyway.

I think it's particularly funny that this guy believes that 3dMark scores are the end-all of a video card.

Try looking into those tests a little harder. The final score is only rated by the first 2 tests. Many of the important tests in that program have no affect on the final score. How do the cards do on all the other tests in there that are not tabulated into the final score? How's the AGP speed of the MAX compared to the TnT2u? How about the quality tests? Or the 20some other tests that are ignored in the end?

Either way, it's all pointless. If you think the card's not good enough for you, send it back. There are plenty of others out there still waiting for their cards who would love to have yours. So just give it up, Tombman. Try playing a game with your cards, and having some fun, instead of giving yourself an ulser over worthless benchmarks. You'll find it more enjoyable than staring at 3dMark99Max all day long

You guys are all right of course , but when i order a g400max i expect a better performance in EVERY game and benchmark than what a tnt2ultra can do .....
I hoped to see the g400max crush the tnt2ultra scores in direct3d .........but ....you know the rest ;-(
I will NOT send the card back (hehe) because i still hope that i will use it some day ;-)
                      (with better drivers )
And kruzin, of course i donĀ“t stare at 3dmark all day long ... instead i play q3a at 1024*768*16 with ALL details at the max at ~50 FPS with my tnt2ultra (heheh , try that with a g400max)

This is for haig : WHEN WILL THE DRIVERS MAKE THE g400max as fast as other cards in opengl ??
