  • Anyone for NT???

    Hi All,
It's probably been asked before but, I'm a newbie so, go easy....

Can anyone give me an idea on how a G400 hold's up with NT. You know the usual stuff, performance, drivers, problems, fixes, recommendations, etc. I'm half way through building a dual Xeon system and the G400 looks the goods but, I don't hear much about the G400 and NT. Any help will, of course be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    RatSak.

Hi Ratsak, you didn't mention which version of NT. Assuming NT4 and speaking for myself (P2@448, G400 MAX, NT4SP5), it works very well - as good as any Matrox card, but faster.
NT PowerDesk however is minimal on features, and don't expect optimal OpenGL performance. OpenGL works for me, but there's still a lot to be done. Not even sure if Matrox and associates are on the right track there, the ICD should be about 4-10 times faster than it currently is, really.

I wouldn't know if the drivers are any good with SMP. I'd be interested to know too. Maybe someone else can chime in there.

I am using NT with a dual processor and the g400 sh 32mb. So far so good. I don't play any games in NT but I do use a few professional programs that utilize OpenGL. 3DSmax 2.5 seems to work ok. I usually use software z-buffer when working but I change it to openGL to see shading in real time. I haven't formulated an opinion on the speed but I know it doesn't crash the system as frequently as the TNT drivers and card I used to use. I'll post again when I get more time with it.

Are any of you running Acad14 under NT? I tried this G400 on two different NT boxes, and got no cursor (or crosshair as the case may be) under either one.
        Just wondering...

So far, NT support BLOWS. I don't know why Matrox has never added such important features as gamma/brightness color controls to PowerDesk NT(for all their cards I think). Dualhead also is minimal at this point.

My Q3test timedemos are looking pathetic so far: mid-teen fps at 640x480 16-bit (gameplay is extremely choppy) on a 300a@450. Windows 98 performance on the same machine is pretty good, comparable to a TNT2 Ultra.

If you're looking for a good 3D card for NT, the TNT2 is probably the way to go(who cares about the bump when NT is DX3).
